Default Rear decklid emblem removal

I want to freshen up my rear decklid and picked up a new matte black "Carerra" emblem. My plan was to remove the old emblem, buff off the old adhesive and get the 17 year old dirt and wax cleaned up.

Well, I removed the old emblem with little trouble, but instead of a few patches of old adhesive, I am left with a hard black "cement-like" residue that mimics the entire emblem.

It won't scrape off with a plastic knife because it truly is hard like cement. I'm afraid to try sand paper or other more aggressive methods without checking in with you all first. Has anyone else encountered this? Right now, looking at this stuff, I'm thinking I'll need a professional to remove it.

WAX. Adhesive remover. Goo Gone. Elbow Grease.

I have had the best luck with high quality wax, finger nails and a LOT of effort.

-enjoy.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the Goo Gone and 3M remover.

I can already see that this quick little job is going to be a weekend project... :/

Heat it up with a hair dryer, but not too hot, and rub off with your fingers and back of thumbnail. Use the back of the nail, because if you err and heat it up too much, you can get into the paint using your nail the typical scraping way. Get as much off as you can that way, then hit it with the 3M.

If you don't already have the 3M, you are welcome to come on down and I'll help you.

That being said, everyone should have the 3M adhesive remover. Like that hot sauce, I use that **** on everything!

GooGone in the plastic container is great.

Be careful of Goof-Off in the metal container - it melts plastic and will remove paint!

Yup, I bought the GooGone (citrus based) in the plastic container. I saw the Goof-Off and other pretenders on the shelf and stayed away.

Tonydec - Thanks for the offer. I've heard of the blow dryer method but I've never done it. I'll PM you.

Try WD40. Let it soak in a bit. It took me about 30 min to take off the residue.

Also use the opportunity to polish paint under emblem before installing new one.

I used an exacto knife to cut through the cement residue as close to the paint as possible (need a steady hand for sure ). Then I used Goo Gone to remove the light residue.

+1 on the WD40, I use that stuff for many things, safe on the paint.
