i know much has been written but most of the info is really dated.
Can anyone recommend a good radar detector, would prefer to hard wire it.

Most people swear by V1 but my favorite one is "Common Sense." Don't mean to brag but I drive a lot and I've yet to receive a speeding ticket in my adult life. Just know your limits and have fun. I feel a radar detector gives you a false sense of security and in most cases just tells you when you've been caught.

I like my Valentine 1. Does a great job. We made a blast to Sebring from Kansas City to watch the 12 hour race and the V1 did a fantastic job and saved us many times over.

I have the cobra radar dectector and I don't recommend it. It seems like the only thing it picks up is the Machines that tell u how fast your going. It saved my *** once and it payed for itself but every thing is changeable from your iPod or smartphone. u can change lots of settings and if u use your phones gps it can give you speed warnings and maps if u got the app I got it because I thought it would tell the speed one it's own it doesnt.

Awesome unit, and ours is 5 or 6 years old.

We do a lot of I-80 and I-15. Saved us dozens of times.

ilko is right most police (at least in canada) use the pop system which is when the just push a button and it tells u how fast but when u release trigger it immedialty stops sending signals. Lots of range an accurate.

I've never used a v1 they are suppose to be top notch but like I said mines only saved me once. Knowledge of spots they sit and drive "smart"

I would call it "situational awareness" being aware of radar in your vacinity is important. Unlike Ilko, I have had speeding tickets but not in the last 10 years that I've owned a V-1.
Of course when you don't exceed the speed limit like Ilko you don't have to worry about speeding tickets...

IMO if you're considering "hard installs" then I would say Escort 9500ci (ignoring system with counter-laser features); but if you are looking for a soft install then I think it's a toss up between the Escort 9500ix and the V1 (I have both, sometimes used at the same time)...you really can't go wrong with either IMO. The pluses for the 9500ix is GPS, option to integrate with iPhone, and user-upgradabe; the biggest negative for me is that there is not much of a "stealth option" (there is a remote display available but it is limited) and mounting locations are limited. The pluses for V1 are stealth install and of course the direction arrows, with the only big negative is lack of GPS in this day of speed cameras, speed traps, etc. Radar and laser detection are more or less comparable between the two that I don't think that would be the deciding factor...I think its the features rather than performance that are main considerations.

My perfect detector would be user upgradable with GPS and direction arrows, which unfortunately there is none out there, although I had read somewhere that Valentine's patent on the direction arrows is ending soon (can anyone confirm?).

Don't know if the patent is ending soon, but the directional arrows really do work.Really helpful when the bears are working in a pack.

V1 is how I fly. Not perfect, but it's worked for me for over fourteen years.

According to some idiots in this thread, the arrows contribute very little info.
