Default Any real road experiences with Michelin Super Sport tires on stock 993?

My only prior experiences are Pirelli assimetrico and Bridgestone S02a. The SS seem to be new and are not N rated tho so Im looking for observations for street, and aggressive street use rather than track.

Hi Zed,

Just installed Michelin Pilot SS tires on my 993 this winter. Stock 18" TT wheels and tire sizes. I am a pretty tame driver, but my impressions after 250 miles.....

- Super quiet versus the Bridgestone S02A tires that were on the car.
- Very supple and smooth ride. Not harsh over expansion strips and road imperfections.
- No 'flat spotting' after sitting for a few days like the S02A's.
- They seem super sticky in the corners.

I should explain that the S02A's that were on the car were in great shape - I just wanted to try a newer, more modern tire. I think the MPSS tires are excellent. Every time I drive the car now I say (out loud), "These tires are ******* fantastic!"

I think they are a great choice for your car.

How are the prices?

There seems to be two camps on Rennlist - one go for the best balance of cost/performance/mileage - and usually tires like the Sumimoto III's are in that camp, and then the other camp of best performance - period. There is a huge price differential between the two.

Michelin's are usually in the best performance category but pricey - so being the cheapie I am I have not tried them. They sounds like great tires, I wonder how much better they are than the Sumi's, etc?

Cheers,

Mike

I need to go through my paperwork and pull together a full review - coming soon! I bought my car in Nov and was the first thing ive done... almost 7,000 miles on them. Ill post some pics and am going to the track Thursday for more fun. I am running stock alignment, so get a lot of push.. the front wheels will overheat and you can feel them.. ive tightened up the dampning and will have to see.. ultimately i need to go with RS alignment and new sway bars (car is toooo soft for me)

Wear has been great so far and great in the cooler \ rain of seattle. Price was just over $1,000 which i thought was a great price for high end rubber. I disagree with going with cheaper tires\long life as we are driving sports cars - tires are wear items and the most important part! Ive talked to people who ran lower perf\cost tires in performance settings and broke their cars.. you only live once - do it in a porsche with sticky rubber

more soooon!

I've recently put them on the Club Coupe and the '06 miata. Both are stock cars and only go on the street, but mpss's seem great. Really improved the miata's handling. On the club coupe, I don't detect much difference from pilot sports. LOTS cheaper than pilot sports, too, though hardly cheap.

Regarding the N rating, I'm guessing there's something going on internally between Porsche and Michelin. At tech tactics, the Michelin rep told us that mpss's are the pinnacle of Michelin's current technology, but went out of his way to say that he wouldn't discuss why they're not N rated.

Not exactly a 993 report, but nonetheless...

Hmm - I do not really buy into the N ratings stuff - I think its a cash-flow device between Porsche and a tire manufacturer. :-)

Cheers,

Mike

I have a hunch that most of us would never know the difference, or even really care about it if we did.

Yup, exactly. Never understood the obsession with street tires. Track tires are a different story, but on the track, tires actually matter.

I guess this is true to an extent. My thoughts...on the 993...ride and noise are gonna be a LOT worse than say my BMWs...regardless of which tire I use. I'm fine with that, because ride and noise are not important to me on the 993. Also, I don't really drive that aggressive, so the performance of most any tire is sufficient for my needs.

However, on the BMWs...it's a completely different story. Over the years, I've tried all kinds of different tires...trying to get the best ride/noise possible. In the end...I have settled on Michelin tires for those cars. I know there may be other tires that are as good, but I'm finished with the searching phase...so when I need tires for the BMWs...it's always Michelin...because I KNOW I'll always be happy with them.

When it comes to performance, Yokohama AD08 are the best tire i had so far on my 993. Would be interesting to hear from otheres how they compare to the Michelins.
