By non-hardening, do you mean something like a silicone seal, which is non-hardening as well. I know the produuct by name which is listed in some factory manuals that I have; I've never used it though.
I do know sealants aren't used around O-rings and other rubber seals, at least not according to the suppliers/manufacturers of rubber seals.

Older 911s maybe that use paper-type gaskets? I have used Hylomar which is a very good product, but on regular gaskets.

Good advice. I pre-lube all the rubber gaskets I install with Dow Corning 111 - works well, has a bit higher temp range (-70C -> 204C as compared to -65C -> 175C for the 55). It does not have the slight swelling factor for rubber that the 55 has though. I use things like Curil-T on other sealing areas.

I just use a light coating of engine oil on the surface of the valve cover rubber seals just so that they can slide (if they need to) during torquing of the valve cover fasteners.
The DC Molykote 55 is used on O-rings elsewhere.
On the oil filter seals, I'll use DC Vacuum Grease.
