At what speed should the rear spoiler rise?
hello all wanted to share those pics and ask a question please regarding the rear spoiler
i think it starts to rise at 80kmh, and i hear it closing at under 20kmh i think
1. is it supposed to rise at 80kmh?
2. can it be programmed to do otherwise?
3. on the 996, i think it only starts to rise at 140 or 160kmh, no? never looked into that

^ awesome, 50mph = 80kmh
thanks for confirming that!
unfortunately my car came with no manual
the following are almost impossible to find when buying a car here if it is not directly from the original owner:
manuals, documentation of history, spare keys, original equipment in trunk
just the way it is!

Up at 48 MPH (80km/h approx) and down at 8 MPH (13km/h approx).
RUF made a control module to change the spoiler settings. Try a search.

I usually press the spoiler button when I get to 40mph and it stays up driving around town. On my last stop before the trip home I leave it up when I shut the car down, and it retracts normally when I'm on final approach.

I don't recall where, but I've seen online pdfs of the manuals. I also have seen the 993 manual for sale on eBay. You might want to try Google on Porsche 993 owner's manual pdf and see what's available on eBay.

50mph is way too slow to have the spoiler go up, 75-80 would be optimum. Im thinking of taking out the fuse for the spoiler. Im always scared its gonna break with all that movement. BTW, do you guys put any grease on the spoiler gear?

spoiler control - switch activated only*
I prefer the clean look of the 964's silhouette and find it annoying that the engine cover spoiler is constantly going up and down in traffic, there is a very simple modification that will give you complete control* using the spoiler dial on the center console. (*via a default in the system, the spoiler automatically deploys at ~75 mph)
This very simple idea came from RL member garrett376.
Instead of the spoiler automatically raising at ~50 mph and retracting at ~7 mph, simply remove the contact from two wires in the spoiler module and you are set. (the module location is different depending on model year).
Most people probably haven't thought about this mod at all and will think it's worthless, but in my experience it's been great. Cooling hasn't been affected at all, nor has the stability of the car (remember it automatically raises at 75). If you routinely drive in traffic and your spoiler needlessly raises and lowers as a consequence, this fixes that.
I did encounter one problem though, if the spoiler deploys, you have to remember to manually lower it. At first I got out of my car a couple times and realized I had forgotten to lower it. I also made sure to tell my mechanic so I didn't think there was a problem with the module during his test drives...
Two wires disconnected + some electrical tape = 911 silhouette at less than 75 mph! Thanks garrett376!

I really dislike the spoiler on the 993. I think I'm going to disconnect it. I never take it on the track anyway, and the fastest I ever go on the freeway is 85. Absolutely no need for a spoiler.

The 993 spoiler control module is located right above where a passenger in the right front seat is pointing their left big toe. Simply unplug it and the spoiler will cease to function. The warning light will also be disabled.

BTW, if you forget to raise the spoiler under 50 MPH, I've noticed that touching the up button once also works when the wing is already up (in other words after you've exceeded 50MPH). This is still good since once the wing is up and you do the tap trick, it will stay up. The way I figure it is the less wear on the mechanism (which already sounds like a coffegrinder on its deathbead ...for 10 years now, lol! ), the longer it will last before I have to replace it. So far sooooo good

To be honest, my main issue when I asked the question was how much I disliked the car's look with the spoiler up at, yes I also agree, such trivial speeds.
Does it have zero effect on cooling?
In other words, does it HAVE anything to do with extra cooling?
I would think not, but I wish to confirm here.
I might go ahead and disable it altogether, if proven that cooling will not be affected one bit. Remember that in summer, we get 50+ degrees Celsius here!

On my 997, the spoiler went up at 73 and retracted at 40-something. I wish there was a way to reprogram the 993's brain to deploy/retract the spoiler at similar speeds. I'd be very happy with that.
