Default I Need Some Tire Recommendations

Since I don't track my car and use it as a spirted dd, I like to purchase four 18" medium-priced tires. So what are you recs? Also any dealings with Tire Rack or Discount Tire Direct?

Tx,

Ken

I've purchased several set of tires from Tire Rack. For mid-priced, look at Kumho, Sumi, and Yokko. There are some recent (spring and summer) tire threads. Try searching for a few.

Ken,
I would suggest you give the Sumitomo HTR Z III a look. I have had mine for 2 years and like them much better than the Conti Contacts they replaced. I use my car as a daily driver. At the time, I thought they were the best performance value tires out there. Contact Damon at Tire Rack. TR did a great job drop shipping the tires to a recommended installer. Drove up Saturday morning and by the time I finished my coffee I had new mounted tires. Good Luck.

Ken,
After our discussion the other week, I'd suggest some Interco Super Swampers, Gateway Gumbo Monster Mudders, or possibly a set of BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires.

I've had very good dealings with TireRack. I bought Hankook EVO V12's. Very inexpensive street tire and I've been pleased so far. I'm not a spirited driver however. If I had to complain, they are a little slippery in the rain or cooler temps.

Another vote for Tire Rack. I have used them for years and have always received excellent service. As for the tires, had Sumitomo HTR Z III for 2 years and they are a good all around tire. I did find them a little noisy as they wear and grip in the wet was mediocre. Recently replaced with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Expensive, but excellent both wet and dry performance and super quiet.

Make sure the tire shop doing the work does dynamic road force balance. And if your wheels are mint, take photos prior to work, to document. Review your wheel's condition with service advisor. Allow 200-500 miles for new tires to scrub-in.

Had Sumi III's on my 964--no complaints. Went with Conti ExtremeContact DW on Gunter II--based partially on TR survey and price. So far, prefer the Conti's but have heard from several 993 owners that the Evo V12 by Hankook are pretty darn good.

It came down to Sumi and Evo when I was researching this just a few months ago. Ended up with the Evo's and, while I'm satisfied overall, if I were to do it over again, I'd try the Sumi's. My (relatively minor) quibble with the Evo's is an unsettling rear wiggle when doing a chicane-type turn, such as a rapid lane change.

So far, the Evo's have been quiet and comfortable with a good ride on a car that's been lowered and stiffened a bit. Did well on the last AX, too. No experience in the rain, yet. A big improvement over the previous Yoke ES 100's.

+1 Conti ExtremeContact DW. I think for the price they are very good.

I agree in on the road force balance. Costs a little more, but necessary.

Damon appearing here in 3... 2... 1... Disappearing immediately after any TireRack problem is mentioned... in 0.5 of a millisecond.

As far as good tires in 18" size, there are only a few. Dunlop Direzza StarSpec, Hankook R-S3, Toyo R1R. These are what fast autocross Street classes people are running and this is what work for your intended purpose if driving is your priority over comfort and wear. Not to offend anyone, but Sumitomo IIIs, Continental Whatever and a number of other tires simply do not measure up to the above three in grip.

Tire Rack Great....

Damon, a waste of time to try and contact.... 3 phone Calls and numerous emails Nothing..... If he is on commission he must be living off bread and water.

Star specs are excellent, not too expensive and seem to wear pretty well. I put a new set on for a 3 day weekend event at Miller Motorsport Park, 950 miles each way travel time, about 550 miles on the track and I am about 1/3 t 1/2 worn.... Pretty happy.

A litte expensive nowdays, but Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's are still an amazing tire...just installed on the C2S.

Tried Continental Extreme Contact DW on my 5-series, which it didn't like at all (anybody need a pair of 275/35-18's?)...changed to a set of the new Michelin Pilot Super Sports...very nice. Would have tried these on the 9, but not available in 285/30-18.

A buddy is very happy w/ the Sumi III's.

Damon at TireRack has been super helpful to me. In addition to working on this recent stuff, I have multiple sets of Blizzak snow tires and he's always been very helpful.
