Hello All!

Here is the scenario:

Came home, parked in the garage, all things good. Messed around in the house for an hour, wife pulled in, and I greeted her. All still seemed good. After about another hour, i went to get something out of the Porsche, and found the back glass was shattered! Closed garage! Still held in place, but shattered! Not the windshield, so the deductible, $500 in this case applies!

Here is the help part: Who has replaced the back glass before? Looking for a ballpark price, as well as if it was a DIY, difficulty of the job.

I will definitely use new OEM rubber gasket, any idea of price from dealer?

Ouch, that deductible really hurts!

This happened to macca recently. There is some little mod they did when they refitted the new screen. I have no idea what the cost was sorry.
I do know it happended after turning the window demister on after pulling it from storage.

Just arrived home with my new front and rear glass. Had it installed at the nearest dealer, Mark Motors in Ottawa.
The quote read " Back Glass, Heated part # 99354510712" $1,289.45, plus the "W/Strip Back Glass" $87.64, plus the "Eruathane Kit" $220.00.
Total Parts: $1597.09
Total Labor ( 3.0hr ) $177.00

Total cost of rear window alone: $1774.09
Total cost of front window alone: $2222.12

Total bill: $3996.21

Jim, in a little shock for the total cost, but I noticed location of work was in Ottawa. Is this in loonies?

Yes, loonie is a good acronym, haha. However the price was almost the same in US $ at a shop recommended by a Rennlister in Syracuse NY.
The Ottawa shop ( Mark Motors, Porsche/Audi dealer ), also did an inspection of the window pockets while they were in there...all good, whew!

The numbers are a bit high. It is likely that the dealer sub'd out the work to a preferred auto glass installer. Sometimes the service advisor will give out the installer's name and you can deal direct and save a few bucks.

The labor rate is great. $59 per hour. Sounds like it was sub'ed out.

Hopefully I won't have to face that issue for awhile! Although the 'rabbit strike' on the front valance could happen again any time I suppose, just one of the risks of driving the ' 2 lane's '.

The shop managed to plastic weld the worst of it and sprayed to match, but I doubt it would survive another smack like that one...which means a new bumper cover and splitter(s) next time.
Got all the way home last night only to find the shop had forgotten to put the 'grill' in the car with the other parts. Leaving now for another 2+ hr drive to hopefully pick it up this morning so I can ( hopefully, ever hopeful...) re-install the cover and splitters later this AM, so I can ( again ever so hopeful ), leave for the weekend driving the p-car...not the Civic, again.

You are correct, when I asked around the shop to see who had done the install, hoping to get an opinion on the condition of the 'pockets'...the one guy I managed to corner said they never do glass, they have someone come in to do it. When he saw the look on my face, he hastily added that it was someone he hadn't seen before so he assumed it was an 'expert on those kinda cars...'. Very reassuring. Yea.

Jim, lets hope the installer didn't scrape the paint or worse yet, the primer while removing the old sealant.

I've seen the frames around newly replaced windows rust in a matter of years due to the incompetence of some installers. They are in a rush...time is money.

When and if that time comes, I'll be removing my own windows and taking the time to remove the sealant myself.

Porsche Canada parts prices in many cases are twice that of Porsche USA parts prices.

I had a bad rubber seal at both bottom corners of my rear windshield and could not get the rubber to stay flat even with 3M adhesive. I gave up at that point and sought professional help. My P-dealer could not guarantee that they would not break the glass upon removal, so I looked elsewhere (never did get a price). I went to my (high-end) auto body repair shop and they quoted me circa $1400-1500 USD for parts and labor, as I recall. They would replace the entire glass panel with new because the plastic channel that the lip of the rubber seal fits in is integral to the glass panel.
