What is the secret to remove the tach?
I'm being lazy not searching the forum. I have some lights on the tach that are gone. The last time I tried to remove it I failed. What is the trick involved with this procedure.

I've taken out the clock by using a small bent screwdriver/prybar with a think cloth wrapped around it, wedging it under the rubber gasket around the gauge lip, and slowly and carefully prying it out around the edge. The same technique should work with all the gauged. Good luck.

You will need to remove/loosen the steering column surround & possibly your steering wheel if you have a Momo/Sparco etc. that is smaller diameter.
The tach is to large to pull out. It will bind against the underside of the dash visor
& the plastic steering column surround.
Good Luck

Patience. I used a small piece of flat plastic and gently wedged around the diameter. If your seal around it is dried up use some armor all or similar product to get it supple. It will come out.

A regular (non-OBC) tach is easy to remove. Use a dining knife to pull it from the socket, then rotate and wiggle it out until it clears the steering wheel and column.
The OBC tach is harder. You'll need to remove the airbag (don't have to disconnect it), and remove the 24mm holding the steering wheel and push the wheel towards you. Make sure you mark the position of the steering wheel prior to removal.

I've had the speedometer and clock out. They were easy. The last time I tried to get the tach out I couldn't quite manipulate it to squeeze it past the steering column and I didn't see where the screws are that hold the cover on.

Get yourself a set of these. It makes the job easier and less chance of scratching.

What is the secret to remove the tach?
FWIW, I use a long handle scraper with about a 1.5" blade and put 1 or 2 layers of electrical tape on the blade. Use it as a pry bar to get under the instrument edge. Clean the rubber trim ring w/ Armor All wipe just before reinstalling the gauge to help it slide back in.
Best of luck Rich.

It's easy. Just remove the plastic steering wheel cover. 4 screws at the bottom. Once you remove this, the tach won't hit it and slide out easily. No need to remove steering wheel, nor air bag.

No need to remove either the steering wheel or the stem trim. I've done it like this several times, OBC/no OBC, leather dash or not. Have a look here how to do it:
