Default 1995 C4 VS 1997 C4S

I am looking at purchasing one of these two cars for mostly a fun daily driving commute and I have found that the slightly newer 4S can be anywhere from 12k-20k more money. My question is what exactly is the difference and is the delta worth it considering condition and milage is equal? Am I making a mistake thinking these can be good DD's? Thanks so much for the advice.

The '95 has OBD 1 vs. '96 and newer have OBD 2. The OBD 2 cars can throw a check engine light when the secondary air injection passages get clogged. The '96 and newer also have varioram valve timing - worth another 12 hp over the '95 (non varioram) engines.

Both would be excellent daily drivers (my '95 is a DD - now owned for 4.5 years and almost 40k miles in that time - incluidng several 2000 mile trips.

Imo the obd1 in the 95 is a pretty important bonus. Just a more simple car all around with fewer things to go wrong. Most 95 cars also don't have the pesky immobilizer. There are bigger brakes on the 4S, but they are heavier in the worst areas (unsprung weight and rotating mass) which will cancel out some of the performance from the extra 12hp. Most will agree that the 95 brakes are plenty good enough. Best thing about the 4S is the wider rear fenders which are pretty much just cosmetic (no change in suspension geometry) but damn, it is a really nice ***.

I think 4S also has the aero side skirts and turbo front bumper along with wide rear body.

So would a C2S be the better way to go to get the cool look and wide rear?

C2S is the same as the C4S, just 2 wheel drive where the C4S is all wheel drive. It is up to personal preference. The C4S has the turbo big red brakes, wide body, all-wheel drive, etc. The C2S was only made in 1998. All 911 coupes made that year were C2S's they used regular brakes, but still had the wide body, they also used a split grill for the engine cover which has become a favorite upgrade for non 98' cars. You can make a C4S 2 wheel drive but you can't make a C2S all wheel drive. The wide body cars (C2S, C4S & Turbo) do have an unmistakable wide ***! It was the wide body look that pulled me back in!
I guess it depends what type of driving you will be doing? If winter driving, you would want a C4/C4S for the all wheel drive, but if you live in a warmer climate then you could choose any of them.

Just to be clear, Varioram refers to variable runner length in the intake manifold, not any valve timing changes.

Variocam, which was introduced in the 996, is the valve timing device.

You really can't go wrong with either 'S' car.
