Why do 993's cost so much?

Agreed. I`m not 996 bashing here, I owned an extremely nice 02 example, but there`s just something missing in the newer car. It`s quicker, faster, and cheaper to maintain (as long as the engine doesn`t grenade) than the 993 but it just lacks that special feeling of the older car.

When I was younger and pretty poor I remember walking in to the dealer and saw my first 993. Red Turbo that was lowered and I think I had tears in my eyes thinking how awesome it was and I might never have one. Then I remember seeing my first 996 in the same showroom and the tears were worse because I knew the 993 would be harder to get someday.......
I too was at a loss for words when I saw my first 993 Turbo in late 1996. I can still tell you exactly where it was, time and day of the week etc...
It was parked in a grass lot on the Intercoastal in Delray Beach, Saturday night in June. Color was silver... I still wonder if its the car I own today. My car was purchased just up the road in Vero Beach but bounced around with the owner...

porsche got it right when they went back to the frog eyes with the 997. if you stare at it, 997 is basically a 996 with different ends (body wise).
reminds me when ducati had the 916/996 and then the horrible 999 (double stacked headlamps) then got it right again with the 1098. i'm sure ducati/porsche knows better than to mess around the with iconic look for now on, loyalist will complain).

Its all about SOUL. 996's simply do not have it, and never will. You guys are fortunate - check prices in Australia. The Aus dollar is stronger than the American one and prices are WAY higher.

Another point of view.
Agree with all the comments regarding the style and design of 993s. (A few of you need to get a life beyond your 993 and you know who you are )
But not all 996s are unattractive. I find the C4S or Turbo 996 cabs simply stunning. The dash is not classic 911 but that is a damn nice looking car. I can't wait for the depreciation to make those cars available for minimal $$$.

WOW!
I didn't realize I'd opened such a large and robust can of worms. The reason I asked (not trolling) is I've always thought the 993 was the most perfect looking 911 ever made and I originally wanted one, but they are too old to get financing thru my credit union, so I bought a 996.
I've never driven a 993 and I read the performance is somewhat less than a 996 which is understandable with improvements in technology, but for me the 993 wins hands down in the style deptartment. I hate the 996 headlights and I love the 993's fender flares, curves - everything.
I'm thinking of trading for a 993 since I can't afford to buy or repair a 996 GT3 - if the engine goes I have to buy a new one from Porsche. I do not like being held hostage by anyone. It seems with the 993's one could build an engine almost entirely with aftermarket parts. Is this true? I want to be able to rebuild the engine, or the entire car for that matter, without having to go thru Porsche and pay their ridiculous prices for parts.
I can deal with slightly less horsepower and handling 'cause for me the car is more than just the performance or lap time, the history and heritage factor in there considerably.

My opinion, when I decided to buy a Porsche and looked at all the options (body style mechanical ect.) there was only one clear choice. The 993 for me was the most beautiful 911 produced, and again in my opinion, still is. Aside from that it is also, as pointed out earlier, "the last of the aircooled". By many I've talked to, the prediction is that the 1995 to 1998 cars will continue to be one of the most collected/desireable 911's ever produced.
So if you are looking to by one and are waiting for the price to go down don't hold your breath. The prices for the 993's already went down with the recession, many believe the 993 prices will rise as the economy returns to a reasonable state.
The only other body style I considered was the Caymen, I did like the styling but it just didn't have the air-cooled engine and I personally didn't like the new dash. I prefer the 993's 5 gauge dash, but thats me.

SANDERSD probably got a lot of car for $28K but the "Desireability" factor enters the equation. How many 996 owners look over their shoulders after parking just to admire their car? How many 996 owners just go to the garage for a chance to do a little more "bonding"? How many 996 owners just can't wait for the excuse to get in their cars and go somewhere? Even the earlier 997's are depreciating at a rapid rate while the 993's are holding their own.
There are plenty of very happy 996 owners who don't want or even like the 993.
Don't think there aren't passionate 996 owners out there.
