993 Smellerholics Anonymous
Hi, my name's Jäger, & I am a 993 smellerholic. Even if not going for a drive, I look for an excuse to visit the garage just for the scent.
I increasingly give into temptation, & sit in its cockpit just to waft in the intoxicating air.
If anyone sees me, I lie about having left something in it. I'm scared they're catching on, & may soon realize it doesn't have the cavernous interior I claim.
Family wants me to seek professional help. I convinced them coming here might help; I've heard there might be others like me.
Is there something wrong with me?
P.S. To appear more normal, I sometimes go to the extreme of driving my car, doubling as desperate attempts to dissipate the habit-forming scent.
However, spirited jaunts just strengthen the irresistible aroma afterwards...

I completely agree with this. I have been looking for an educate answer for the last 6 or so years. So far, nothing definitive. Hypotheses about glue, certain leather supplies, etc. But who knows. I will tell you this, it is oh so distinct...

I just had the exhaust and air intake replaced with Fabspeed components, and the smell is gone. It must be due to either oil on the engine/exhaust components or the coatings of the exhaust parts baking off. I'm hoping this means that my seals are pretty tight - otherwise I'd likely be smelling more of the same by now.

Count me in! One of those things that makes these cars special and always an event to drive. A while back after going out to dinner, my girlfriends 10 year old son, upon getting out said "Mmm, Bart's car smells good!". Unfortunately she disagreed, saying that it smells like brakes or something (it was just the typical aircooled smell). He also always wants to go in either of my cars, though he prefers the 993. He claims not to care about cars, but I've been working on him. He has various Porsche toys/caps etc, some I brought from Germany. He's also made several comments about it being classy/cool/etc.
Anyway, I love the smell.
Anyway, I love the smell.

and my poor son is already developing the addiction at the tender age of 7.
on more than one occasion he has said "I like the way the garage smells".
and "smells like Porsche in here"

Took my 10 year old grandson to hockey today in the Porsche, where it had been sitting for a week. When he got into the car he said "This car just smells so much better than my dad's". Bear in mind that my son's car has his, and his two kids, hockey gear in it all the time.

I'm afraid that we're addicted to the comforting scent of the aromatics that consist of the scent of aged factory leather and carpet of the car's interior mixed with the subtle but sometimes strong scent of baked on oil from the heat exchangers. This scent mixture usually permeates into everything and everyone that rides in our cars. It's a smell that is so unique and prevailent in any repair shop that services aircooled cars that any of us could probably identify blindfolded, so recognizable like our mother's home cooking or our father's pipe tabacco or cigar.
