Default Why do 993's cost so much?

I paid 28k for a 2002 996 C2 w/ 44k miles. The 993's are averaging 35k.

What gives?

I'll start.

My opinion:
Air
Build quality
Design integrity
Something about 996 crank bearing

Because air cooled 911,s are keepers. 996 and Boxsters are more like a 944 .Still a good car but not as much passion attached. Also the M96 IMS failure scares me.

Why does the Mona Lisa cost so much?

I kid, I kid. I think besides being the last of the air-cooled and having very popular aesthetic appeal, the fact that there are fewer available drives the price up.

This is easy: supply vs. demand. There were very few 993s made compared to 996s made.

Also, the 993 was the last of the air-cooled Porsches, which not only was the culmination of over 40 years of know-how, but many purists think it's the last of the "real" Porsches. The 996 is water cooled.

Many feel the 996 is not nearly as good looking as the 993, especially with the shared parts with the Boxster, like the ill-received fried egg headlamp treatment.

Also, although all Porsches can have problems, the 996 problems include the entire engine grenading via bad IMS issues. No such problem on the 993.

There's the short answer, and some of the reasons the 996 sells for less than an older and comparable 993.

Why do 993's cost so much...kinda reminds me of the question/joke

why is divorce so expensive.

The answer for both is the same

BECAUSE THEY'RE WORTH IT!

Just park a 996 near a 993, look at them very good and you will understand easily.

like goofball said: supply and demand.
According to the easiest sources, there were approximately 204,391 996s built.
There were 68,921 993s built.
So one third as many cars produced. It's the same reason that a nice classic 87-89 costs more than a 996, or a nice 964 costs more than a 996, or why you can buy a pretty nice Boxster for $10K.

+993 and I believe the GT3 has some 993 in it, like the block is 993....
Also the design of the 997 was based off of the 993 i.e. Headlights, fender flares. The 996 was designed like the early 911 styling very flat no wheel flares. No curves.....Serena Williams vs. Olive Oyl
