Default ABS and ABD warning lights came on today...

Any ideas? They came on once when I was on the brakes, but nowhere near enough to activate ABS. I stopped and cranked it back up and they stayed on. When I got to my parents, I checked the fuse, which was not blown. Put it back in and then when I left, the lights weren't on. About 15 minutes up the road, they returned.

My plan it to check the connection at the computer and then check Streather's book before checking the wheel sensors. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Next time the lights are on, try the brakes hard in a safe area. If they lock, take a look at the 2 relays mounted above the spare tire well on the passenger side. I had this problem and it turned out that the relays simply needed to be removed and reinserted. Probably a small amount of corrosion caused the problem.

Cheers,
Joe

i too had an intermittent problem with the ABS /ABD lights coming on. pulled the relays mentioned above and cleaned the contact blades well. then a bit of WD-40 in the sockets and re-installed the relays. (there are 3 on my car). that was a couple of years ago. no more problems. certainly the first thing to try.

You're right - there are 3.

For once I might be able to offer some help with this one. I would definatley start by pulling out the speed sensors and cleaning them. They get pretty dirty and a clean can sort this one out. This trips the light as well.
I have spent hours upon hours with sorting ABS/ABD issues recently. Mine was as simple as having a proper bleed, but the sensors are the main thing to check.

Bart,

I had that issue for about four years; both lights would come on intermittently and stay on until you restart the car. It became more frequent until the lights wouldn’t go off at all.

Dealer replaced Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor PN: 993-606-405-00. One year and 6,000 miles later no problems. I would suggest you check into it. It seems pretty common with 993.

Good Luck

Alex

I can try later but they are obvious - pull up the carpet and looking at the spare they will be to the left mounted on the fender. about centered (fore and aft) along the fender - there is nothing else right there electrical but those 3 relays.

AlexO - by chance was your car parked in the Corpus Airport last week. saw a silver 95 with cup wheels there on Wed. are you in the Corpus Area?

Stace,

I’m in Houston. Haven’t been to Corpus in couple of years. Those Polar Silver 993’s are a dime in a dozen, I’m telling you.

Alex - did they say how they narrowed it down to the LF sensor? Even if you think it is the sensor, it would seem to be a crapshoot unless you just replace all 4. What do the sensors go for and how hard are they to change?

Get a code reader like the Durametric and pull up the code. That will help isolate the issue.

I too chased one of these problems and I ended up replacing the control unit.

Timely resurfacing of this post. My lights now occasionally go on and stay on at startup but go off normally if I restart. Sounds like I need to check my relays and clean the wheel sensors.

Timely for me too but not with the 993. My '97 M3 has started having ABS/ASC lights on the dash. Most of the time they are off when I start out but come on 2 - 5 min after I've been driving. I guess I'll be doing the same thing.
