Default Maintenance list

I recently purchased my 993, 1997 with about 24,000 miles. The last big service was at 15,000 miles and since that date (about 7 years or so), the prior owner did little maintenance except oil changes. He did keep the car very clean and dry, with about 1000 miles a year....

I was given the attached list below for a 30K service. Is there anything else you would do? Thanks

Diagnose/Test

Data Link Connector

Read fault memory.

Inspect

Body and Frame

Lubricate door hinges and rear lid hinges. Check door, lid locks and safety hooks on front lid for tightness and operation.

Brakes and Traction Control

Check pads and discs for wear. Check hoses and lines for damage, routing and corrosion. Check brake fluid level.

Clutch, M/T

Clutch: Check play or final position of pedal. Check fluid level.

Drive Belt

Drive/Propeller Shaft

Visual inspection of dust boots, leaks or damage.

Exhaust System

Check for leaks and damage.

Check front differential fluid level.

Fluid - M/T

Fuel Delivery and Air Induction

Visually inspect fuel system for leaks or damage. Check hoses, lines and connections of intake air system for damage.

Check headlights for alignment and operation. Check all other lights for operation. Check horn.

Parking Brake System

Check handbrake operation and adjustment.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation

Check hoses and connections, clean filter where applicable

Power Steering Fluid

Seat Belt

Check condition and operation.

Steering Gear

Check for leaks or damage.

Suspension

Check all suspension components for tightness or damage. Check track rods links for play or damage.

Throttle Cable/Linkage

Check for smooth operation and full throttle opening, lubricate as necessary

Tires

Check condition and pressure.
Vehicle

Visual inspection for leaks (oils and fluids). Check ignition circuits 1 and 2 with system tester 9288. Road test: check brakes, parking brake, clutch, cruise control, steering, heating, A/C and instruments.

I can tell you after buying a similar car with 28k miles.

You need new belts, plug wires, fuel filter, plugs and a distributor/rotors.

Last but not least drop it and put on some noise cans if it hasn't been done.

Congratulations on the car, a 993 with <30k miles is getting near barn find territory.

Everything Shaddow993 said plus a full flush of brake fluid. This stuff goes bad over time and some of the wax (I assume that’s what it is) falls out of suspension and can clog the system. I would also condition all of the gaskets (doors, windows, etc), Wurth makes a really good product for this, I just don’t remember the name off the top of my head….

+1 on what the other guyz have said so far.

Myself? I got my 1996 C2 with 21,000 miles on the odometer back in 2006. Even though the car had been 'well looked after' I STILL had the 30,000 mile service done AND 'then some'.

If I remember correctly... all three 'fan belts', both rotors/caps, all 12 plugs (I asked my indy to keep the plugs so that I could check out their condition - he did), all fluids changed/flushed (yes the brake-fluid will looks like soft cheese at the nipples), new air and pollen filters, air-bag 'spring' checked, new fuel filter, new battery (Optima 'red top'), new headlight lenses, 4 X new Michelin (Sport) Pilot tires, new rear-spoiler (black plastic) 'deflector' (it tends to 'crack' at the 'hinge'), new VarioRam vacuum-distributor/hub device (it tends to collapse with age when a vacuum is applied - screwing up your VarioRam). I also went around ALL the rubber I could find and applied Aerospace 303 Protectant!

"Since we were in there" ...so to speak... I had my indy change out the suspension and drop the car down to RS height. (Thankyou ViperBob for the M030/Bilstein/swaybars setup!).

All of this 'servicing' cost me ....nine thousand dollars -- but it literally brought the car back to 'better' than showroom and working condition and, in many ways 'turned the clock back'.

Porsches are really and truly built to last (a term that's been bandied about is 'over-engineered').
IMHO, if you 'look after the damn thing' and KEEP it in top-notch condition -- it will give you YEARS of reliable service, confidence in deciding to tackle long journeys and immense driving pleasure, to boot.

A proper 30k service should include a brake fluid flush and then you will be good to go. I also would replace the belts even if they look decent. If original, the age is getting 'up there' and you want peace of mind. Mods are a personal choice.

Great find and enjoy!!

Plugs and plug wires at 30k service?? Is that what the 30k service calls for?

I assumed that while not normal at 30K, that given the age - she turns 15 this year - it would be a good idea?

If the car runs fine and when you spray some water on the wires, they aren't arcing, there is no good reason to spend the $500+ for the wires, and however much for labor.

Agreed on all points above. 993s like to be driven regularly. Ive had mine a decade and there havd been periods of that ownership due to offsore commitments when the car has only travelled 1000 miles over a 2 year period. Unfortunately it doesnt lighten the requirements on service - infact the car has developed leaking lower valve seals (finally after 15 years of age) only when sitting stating and same said for rubber belts getting hard etc. Ive always had it serviced annually even when miles have been less than 500 in a 12 month period and i would recommend that.

The brake fluid is a big one. I get this done every 2 years. Its hydroscopic. Evenyually moving to SS braidedlines was a plus as the rubber ones eventually will wear...

Luck

I can tell you my plug wires looked fine, that is until I started moving the ones by the muffler. As soon as you start moving them.....crack crack crack. Not all but a few will.

Heres a list once you approach 60k---this was me my list in April 2007.

For those creaping up on their 1st 60k tune, food for thought on the following.

TO BE DONE
(Note: * denotes parts supplied by me)
1. * Suspension upgrade:
a. 4 X Bilstein HD shocks (with 30mm extra threads)
b. 4 X ROW M030 Springs
c. Front 22mm M030 Sway Bar
d. Rear 20mm M030 Sway Bar
e. Rear Drop Links
f. Front Drop Links
g. KLA Strut brace install

2. * Change spark plug wires-Beru
3. * Change air inject check valve (SAI check valve)
4. * Change both cabin air/pollen filters
5. * Change the engine air filter
6. * Change all 12 spark plugs (yea, esp. # 12 that, I know, is a PITA)
7. * Change both distributor caps
8. * Change both distributor rotors
9. * Change fuel filter
10. * Change engine oil (I will supply 10Q Mobil 1 - 15W50)
11. * Change large oil filter
12. * Change small oil filter
13. * Change A/C compressor drive belt
14. * Change Alternator drive belt (inner)
15. * Change Alternator drive belt (outer)
16. * Change power steering belt
17. * change ignation coil wire
18. Change manual transmission fluid. REDLINE
19. Bleed/flush the clutch hydraulic system
20. Bleed the brakes
Note The brake system was completely flushed less than 7 months ago so the
(ATE super blue)
21. Please perform all the (remaining) normal checks, lubrications etc. as
specified in the
60k service interval. In particular, please re-lubricate/check tolerances of
the manual
transmission gear-shift linkages/bushings etc.
22. Remove and Clean ISV
23. Replace front hood shocks

**THE UNEXPECTED**
-belt tension indicator-bearing was froze.
-Ignition coil-shot for the most part
-Distributor rebuild

My ISV was really clogged up. The occassional stall with the lwf. I think Steve W. has been telling me to clean for about 2 years so I got it done!!
