I've done it twice w/o dropping the engine. However, its not alot of extra work to drop the whole unit and reinstalling the forkshaft is more tedious with the engine still in place.

Next time I'm dropping both the engine and transmission.
You will have to do an alignment (at least the rear) after you finish the job when you do an engine drop on a 993.
If you're careful, you can scribe marks and return the eccentric bolts to their original position. The factory manuals indicate same.
When I did my transmission swap, I opted to pull the engine and trans together even though I have a lift in my garage. Frankly, unless your car has recently had a full service, it probably pays to drop them together. Just the time saved doing the spark plugs will make the extra work worthwhile.
When I did it, I dropped the engine. The shop that has my car right now, just dropped teh tranny and left the motor in place. Personally, I had a hard enough time lining everything up when out. I cannot imagine trying to do it while the motor is in the car. If you do it all the time, I suppose you'd get the hang of it if you did it often enough.
