Question Can the clutch be changed without removing the engine?

In other words, is it possible to remove the G50 and leave the engine in place supported by a jack?

Can the G50 be moved forward enough to clear the spline of the input shaft?

I am used to removing engine/transmission together on the older 911 and wonder if that should be the same procedure for the 993.

Thx.

I've done it twice w/o dropping the engine. However, its not alot of extra work to drop the whole unit and reinstalling the forkshaft is more tedious with the engine still in place.

Its not difficult to bend the mainshaft when extracting the transmission if its not properly supported.

One needs some extra care with this procedure.

Yes, Neil and I did this successfully. Do a search under his screenname.

Next time I'm dropping both the engine and transmission.

You will have to do an alignment (at least the rear) after you finish the job when you do an engine drop on a 993.

If you're careful, you can scribe marks and return the eccentric bolts to their original position. The factory manuals indicate same.

When I did my transmission swap, I opted to pull the engine and trans together even though I have a lift in my garage. Frankly, unless your car has recently had a full service, it probably pays to drop them together. Just the time saved doing the spark plugs will make the extra work worthwhile.

Cheers,
Joe

The trans is pretty heavy. I would just drop the motor - it's easier then you think. Plus you can do a bunch of while your in there stuff.

When I did it, I dropped the engine. The shop that has my car right now, just dropped teh tranny and left the motor in place. Personally, I had a hard enough time lining everything up when out. I cannot imagine trying to do it while the motor is in the car. If you do it all the time, I suppose you'd get the hang of it if you did it often enough.

My mechanic did this very thing on my car when we extracted the tranny to change the synchros.
