If you keep them long enough, all 993's will eventually appreciate because of the low production numbers and the fact that they're so driveable, and are truly the last of the 911's aircooled heritage. Like others have said, the lowest production number models will go up more, and any 'specials' like Turbo 'S' cars and real factory lightwieght cars like RS's, well, I think they will follow in the footsteps of their Rennsport lineage, 911R, 911RT, 911ST, 911RS, 911RSR where owners can just name their price when a collector comes calling ....

I disagree, and I've owned both types.

First, those cruisers and muscle cars are 40-50 years old. At 15 years old, they weren't worth much either.

One only need to look at the prices of a 356 convertible to see where the 993 convertible could be priced in, say, 30 years.

Small production numbers of a beautiful convertible from a prestigious auto maker coupled with a nice 40-50 year wait almost always yields a big price premium.

Total 911 has an interesting compendium at the end of each issue which rates each Porsche model ever build for desirability/collectibility. You may want to check it out. While I personally think our 993's are too new (and way too mass produced) to be considered collector cars, Total 911's evaluation does seem to tie in with how each model is retaining value (i.e. the "desirability" quotient).

I agree. It is just too early in the 'collectible game' to say when and how much. A well-maintained 993 Porsche in 2040 will probably fetch more money than you will be laying out to buy one today. Provided we still have a country and gasoline

Thanks for all the replies guys, great informative forum!

I see your opinions on the fact the coupes will become more valuable then the cabs.

What I have been thinking about now instead is trading my 997S for a 997S cab and getting the 993(S) coupe.

Though, something worries me about this situation and is something I want your opinion on: Would I end up never driving the 993, as the 997 has better performance, more comfort and would be the cab? I would just find myself thinking, "why take the 993 which is not as comfortable or fast and I want to put the top down?" As opposed to where I may take the 997 Coupe for a more performance focused drive, and the 993 when I want to have the top down and be less mindful of the performance and stiffness of the chassis the cabs don't have.

It just kills me the cabs are worth less because it really seems it would be the best one for me.

What are your thoughts?

From a strictly performance numbers standpoint, you're right about the 997 vs. 993. But there are other factors at play here.

Many feel the 993 has a more visceral feeling than the 997. More connected to the road; more raw. Remember, its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow, and with the 993s, you have no nannies to babysit you at the limit.
Some say the 993 has way more "soul" than the 997. Forget the fact that, at least in SoCal, 997s are a dime a dozen, and the 993 is arguably way better looking.

The fact is more likely than not, the 993's limits exceed yours as a driver. Many who own a 997 get rid of it to buy a 993, and those with both often prefer the 993 over the 997, unless they want a lux GT, which is really what the 997 is.

Best you drive them all, and don't get stuck in investment so much. All 993s will appreciate/depreciate in a similar fashion.

You have what my friend calls a "quality problem". We should all be so lucky. Get your *** in some Porsches and drive and see what speaks to you then.

Drive a 993 and then decide whether you want to buy one. If you want a collectible 911 from the 90s that can kick the 997's *** get a 964 3.6 turbo. Single turbo RWD - scary fun!

I don't believe for one minute that a cab will be worth less than a coupe way down the road. That is BOGUS!!! Any collector is well aware that "when the top goes down, the price goes up". If you want a cab, get one.

I have decided, for me, the Cab is best as I already have a 997S Coupe which I plain on keeping.

Here is what I want:

Arctic Silver/Black w/ black top,
manual of course,
low miles, good shape,
latest years possible

If anyone knows of one for sale please PM me. Thanks.

I just sent a PM to you and then looked at Holt Motorsports to see if he had anything. He does have a low mileage '95 silver cab with 6 speed. He has two other 993 cabs as well which is unusual for him lately. He told me the nicer cabs are getting tougher to find (his standards anyway). www.holtmotorsports.com

John
we own a 993 4S and an 09 2S

I prefer to drive the 993.
the only true advantage the 997 has = 110 more HP, but that'll just get me into trouble anyway.
The 997 is "better" in almost any definable metric, but the 993 kicks its *** for the unmeasurable etheral experiences.

buy a new cab and an old coupe.

have fun

Found one, just need some help with this,

I see this picture and it seems like the exhaust tips are extra big and therefore aftermarket.

As it would prefer that everything is original on the car, I ask if anyone with knowledge of 993s can tell me if these look original or not.

Thanks,

John

Need the pic or link to it. Don't be concerned with a good quality aftermarket exhaust system. Most here think that's a plus. If it turns out later that you don't like it, you can always sell it. There are always plenty of stock exhausts to buy or trade. Be sure to get a PPI.
