you have to drive hwy 36 !!!! from hwy 1 to hwy 5- go east bound....its awesome and takes 4 hours.....
from 5 south in Grants pass take 199 west. then go hwy 1/101 south go thru Eureka then take 36 east....
make sure you fill up with gas first!
this will dump you off at hwy 5 again south of redding at red bluff....
long detour but AWESOME roads.
also on 199 you will go thru the GIANT redwoods area - stop at Jedediah Smith RW state park....!!!!

Great back roads and scenery around Sonoma (Kenwood, Glen Ellen etc.). Take 101 on the way back and go through Redwood National Park.
I've done San Diego - Vancouver in 21hrs non-stop. You can do this!

Just got checked in to a Motel 6 in Portland. Left the house @ 9:30 pm. I-5 is just like all other freeways........good to get you there but boring (and fairly choppy in spots). Glad we came through @ night with all the construction happening. Thanks for the suggestions thus far everyone. Gonna grab some sleep and make decisions in the am.
Gotta love these last minute trips!

+1 Hwy 36. Last time I did it, we met a 1 liter sport bike group that rode all the way from Reno just to do 36.

+997 on Hwy 36.
This could be the focal point of the trip. The road is very lightly traveled and patrolled. The first twisty section out of Red Bluff is like a roller coaster.Sharp turns followed by drop-offs and rises. On a moto it's airborne city! The road has all types of turns. From tight twistys to high speed sweeping. The road was also repaved a few years ago and is in awesome condition.
Do Hwy 36!

+1 on Hwy 36 found it by mistake/gamble trying to get to the pacific coast. From hwy 5 offered great visibility but was always a little nervous of bottoming out (lexus sedan) have to try again when heading to Vancouver in my Pcar. Another video

That's exactly how much traffic you'll see out there too. Few sport bikes and an occasional pick up truck. That's why Johnny Law does't bother patrolling much.

OK, doing the 36/101/1 (don't worry, I'll figure it out). Just deciding whether now or on way back.
Time to check out of the Motel 6. Must be German owned, seems very "efficient."

Enjoying those left-lane squatters on I-5 yet?
Safe trip & have fun... BTW, nice stop on coast is Trinidad, CA. Quiet little town, scenic harbour, and nice casual dockside restaurant (Seascape?). If you stop, here's a wine tip: get something by 'Cabot Vineyards' at Murphy's grocery store (and they'll do 10% off on 6+ bottles). Cheers!

I was going to comment on that sign. Every time I take that road I mean to stop and get a pic of it but am having too much fun. Seeing it makes you think "Oh boy, oh boy".
