It's a great car don't get me wrong, but my old Mitsubishi EVO 8 was faster.
They don't embarrass the 993 by any means, they are faster, but not by as much as you would think.

There over 3500lbs, & do 0-60 in 4.5 sec. While not slow by any means, there not "supercar" fast.

If we judged everything by 0-60 time we'd all be driving rice burners and have more $$ in our pocket. Way more about the R8 than it's "Non Super car" 0-60 time.

A good 993 with get to 60 in 5.2 seconds and run the quarter in 13.6 up to a top speed of maybe 175 on a good day.
Not to mention the R8 lapped the Nring 24 seconds faster (8:04 to 8:28)
Oh, and my old mustang was faster than a 997 GT2 but so what?
They are significantly faster...period.
Not literally. performance wise, without question.
They are as fast or faster than a 993TT

Car and driver managed to get to 60 in 4.0 seconds, with a quarter mile of 12.6, with a top speed of 187.

The ring time is a very reasonable comparo though it would be very interesting to see what a bog-standard 993 with the right options (M030, LSD) and modern tires would do today.

Apples to apples, when C&D had their longterm 95 993, it did 0-60 in 4.6 and the 1/4 in 13.3 with a top speed of 161mph. It should be noted that the 993's top speed was measured at Chrysler's test track in Michigan which, I believe, is an oval. Ovals tend to scrub speed at this level so the claimed 168mph for a 6-speed, non Vram coupe seems reasonable.

That said, I struggle to believe 4.6 to 60.

Actually, several contemporary tests of various 993 Turbos generated 3.7-3.9 second 0-60 runs. Massive clutch drop mandatory.

If I had to guess, I'd say without a clutch drop, the 993tt would get to 60 in about 5.5 seconds.

Hey ... who hijacked my thread :-)
I'm still not trading my new R8 for the Benz wagon (good thing for the Benz there were no corners on the way to the grocery store)!
I promise to report back on a comparison when the new R8 arrives :-) I must driving around in the 993 on an incredible Vancouver day, I'm having some second thoughts.
Best regards, Doug

Hey fellas, I know Doug will read this post however I want your advice. I don't know Doug however he seems like a great guy with a great car. I've always been told to never buy a 911 without a thorough PPI. I'm very interested in buying this car and Doug has been very forth coming with all the maintenance that has been done to the car. Needless to say I think I would be comfortable buying this car without an inspection. Many of you have seen the car and know the owner so I would really like to hear from you please. I have a 964 to sell but could buy the car without selling although I'd rather not. I just don't want to let this car slip away! Sorry for the long post. Any advice would be great!

Derek
