Belt and Pulley Replacement

Belt and Pulley Replacement
I’m replacing all the belts on my 993 and after reading all the DIY’s and past posts I got a little nervous about removing the alternator nut and the fan pulley bolts. I bought the Porsche tool ($25.00 at the local friendly dealer) to hold the alternator shaft but was not impressed with the quality of the wrench. It is very sharp and does not fit very well (no previous damage as the belts were never done before). Actually, I thought if it slipped at all it would cut the inside of the shaft stripping it quickly. I found a 10mm 3/8in triple square drive socket (aka: XZN and polygon) on the Snap-On web site for $7.15, it’s high quality and it fits perfectly. No cutting or welding the part just use a 3/8in breaker bar and 24mm wrench and you’re done.
The bolts holding the pulley to the fan came out without a problem. A little WD40 and a slight tap on the socket and they came out easily. The original bolts are black oxide and the new bolts are plated with yellow cad with the same socket head depth but hopefully a little harder material.
I should have the new pulleys next week to finish the job.

Rich,
Great find on that socket - finally one that works for this application right out of the box.
Snap-On socket
I'd return that silly 'Porsche' wrench - it's probably cast pot metal...

I'm guessing that he's talking about the updated alternator pulleys. They replaced two piece pulleys with one piece. Read more here:

sure dude!
I just did this a few weeks ago. Expensive little pulley! $48.75 for each half at Pelican. I'm always amazed at how much they can get for the simplest parts when the word "Porsche" is on the bag.
Oh yeah, and I used the cheap-o Porsche tool and it was fine.

You're right, the wrench from Porsche is a piece of crap but I think I'll just put it in my tool bag. This is a pix of the original
Porsche tool, they must have changed suppliers at some point.
