Many claim to have a Carrera RS "Clone" just by adding the front splitters and rear spoiler... After reading Schmidtwerk's "essay", one realise that there is no way you can clone a standard Carrera to become an RS. There are lots of RS look alikes (including my own 993), but they will never be the REAL THING. Unfortunately for all of us "wanna be's", fortunately for the few lucky ones...

it's probably easier/faster to list areas where they are identical than different!

Imitation is the sincerest of flattery.
Personally, I think the 993 RS is one of greatest Porsches ever made.
I look forward to incorporating many of the RS features while upgrading my 993 to my idea of the best modern 993 driver/track coupe. $$ permitting!

PS - no RS badging for me, respect the proper car and those lucky owners. Plus, you are only fooling yourself....

RS "tribute" seems more appropriate than "clone" in most instances. That said, there is a way to clone an RS...throw a lot of time and money at it. Bill's and Matt's cars are good examples of what I would consider an RS clone.

you need to start with:

seam welding
sunroof removal
headlight washer removal

otherwise you've set off on the wrong foot !

Thanks to all, especially Schmidt and Bart.

A couple more questions:
Doesn't the RS have a C4 tunnel? (the manual doesn't seem say so)

Was the non-RS varioram induction (MY96, M64/21) derived from the RS? For those who wish to buy a std Carrera, is it better to get a '96 rather than '95 because of that?

What about the S model? Was it just a wide body with no engine modifications?

Is it easy to swap the roof skin for no sunroof? Anyone have pics?

Here is a fun thread

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-progress.html

You can add Varioram, but I personally would start a project like this with a 96-97 car.

See the link in my sig for more info on Vram conversion. Since you're in Europe it doesn't make much sense to start with a non vram car. However, in the US, starting with a non-vram car allows you skip OBD-II (which can be a real PITA).

Best part of the RS is the wonderful g50/31 gearbox. But then again, I'm somewhat biased.....

That's news to me. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_993 (see under Turbo heading), the normally aspirated 993s did not have OBDII??
Thanks for the heads up though! I would prefer one without an OBDII for sure.

US 96-98 cars are OBD-II. Europeans don't need to worry - all their 993s are OBD-I.

The basic chassis structure is the same for all 993 & 993tt & 993RS, the only difference is a reinforcement piece behind the very front wall of the chassis used on RS but not others. They all have the same center tunnel which imparts a great deal of rigidity to the structure. RS uses thinner glass all around and manual window winders and mirrors. Some versions of RS have no a/b and use 911 style dashboard

m64/21 is a detuned derivative of the m64/20 RS engine, the intake pipes are aluminum instead of mg on RS and of course the cams, p/c etc are different as well

as for easy it depends on the skill set you bring to the table. There are different ways to replace the sunroof but yes welding on a new roof section is one way.

s models are just fat n/b's, 4s did get the turbo brakes but otherwise nothing special, they don't even use wider wheels oe
