Not the only way. There is at least one mechanic close to me who does it without that. www.patwilliamsracing.com

My other regular mechanic doesn't do it either, he chooses to replace the whole unit. He said it's not much of an upcharge and you get all new parts.

What are some available shops on line that will over haul (replace the belt, clear/repack bearings and other associated parts) the distributor system? And what do they charge?

Ken, If you do a search under "distributor belt" you'll find out a lot of info. Mark Cohen supposely does a great job and a quick turn around. https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ent-shops.html

For those planning to replace belts I would remind you to make sure oem belts are used. When I purchased my car it had newly installed aftermarket belts on it and began to throw miss fire codes. The solution was to replace the new aftermarket belts with oem.

Did someone replaced the bearings too? I replaced the belt let say 25000km ago, but didn't replace the bearing. My car has now 140.000km on the clock (I hope this is the true mileage) and still runs on the original bearings.
Any advice on that? reference numbers?
Thanks

P.S. the pin part number was given time ago on this forum: 930.602.922.00

New dual distributors run $1176 and IMHO, there are far less expensive ways to have new innards,.........

I know he doesn't charge that much. He trades the old unit back in. I want to say it's $400 pluy slabor, and he charges an extremely fair labor rate.

The other guys, Pat Williams, claims to be the only one around who replaces it without taking the gear off. He used to be the lead mechanic for White Lightning and has a lot of other race experience.

Must not be a Porsche-sourced item since the factory discontinued that exchange program over a year ago.

Pat is a VERY sharp guy, but one cannot check the 4 bearings without taking it apart and I think thats critical, given the age of these things....

Thanks again, Steve.

It was last year when Wickie told me this, so... Perhaps he has a new plan now.

I can't argue with that If I lived around OR, I would be visiting you, my friend.

FWIW, we also offer this service (unfortunatetly, more expensive than Mark), however we can service and replace the bearings if they need it.

I'm waiting on Mark's reply now. I wanted to make sure he's cleaning and repacking the bearings too. Otherwise, there is no need to replace the belt and have the distributor lockup on you in a couple of miles.

So Steve, what do you charge for the complete job?
