I'd be in for a set of lowers and hardware too, I guess.

Question Hargett valve covers

Might this group buy include 964's? If so, might want to cross post. Also, provisions for reinstalling wire clips?

Is this a mod purely for aesthetics or is there a technical reason to justify? ? - No, I won't ask about the HP gain !

Well, it is all about engine cooling. Probably good for your area ;-) The original lower cover are plastic which will not have the same effect than aluminum for cooling the oil and getting the heat away. In addition the plastic cover expand and shrink with different oil temperature more than the aluminum cover which will result in (earlier) leaks.

In general - a good mod - especially when you have already leaks.

It's all about warping=leaking. The plastic covers are fine when new, but age sets in. Plastic + age + heat = seepage. The alum covers are sturdy, thick units that are very stiff. Assuming all else is good, these covers will not warp, hence reduce your likihood of leaking tremendously.

I'm getting some seepage on the rear drivers side, which I believe is due to the lower valve cover gaskets.

Can I just replace the gaskets and use the old covers or is this a 'while you're in there' thing and should replace the crappy OEM covers anyway? How much is an OEM cover vs. the group buy one?

Arrwin,

I replaced the lower seals and re-used the original (crappy) covers, the minor dripping from the bolts was lessened, but persisted. Apparently the OEM covers get warped slightly from the heat. These things should have been aluminum from the get go.... German or Chinese engineering? Jesh...Come on!

imho, it's a "while you're in there" thing. I'd get them but I just did my gaskets. But next leak I will replace the plastic covers with aluminum, they're just getting too old to stay dry. But I don't want to spend the $$ on the covers right now and either have them sit until the next leak or do gaskets all over again.

I just did this mod last month. The parts are nicely done with excellent fit.

I resealed my original valve covers but they began leaking again in less than 2 years/20K miles. So, this time I opted for the billet covers. Replacing gaskets and cleaning burned oil from the heat exchanger is not a bad job, but not one I want to do every year or two.

Besides, they look pretty slick, if you leave your engine tray off anyway...

Understood. Thanks for clarifying guys. I see the OEM valve cover is $96 from Pelican, so the aluminium versions are about 3x the price. But i'm assuming they will last forever and it sounds like even after I replace the gaskets, it will still continue to leak due to the warped covers. The group buy is definitely a good price. Pelican sells the same ones for $310. Hmmm.....3x the price....
