The icon disc is of a hard plastic and sits in a slot or channel molded into the softer switch ****. You should be able to push the outer lip past the edge of the icon disc with your finger tip if you think you might slip and bugger things up with a screwdriver.

ok, this is great information ! Once separated from the outer rubber lip, does the disc lift off of the switch to replace the bulb from the top, or does the rubberized switch surround slide up off the switch ? etc etc etc
I'm going to keep asking my stupid questions until someone bans me from rennlist ;-)

The disc pulls out straight towards you. The bulb is directly behind the disc, and pulls out the same way. Push the new bulb in, and reinstall the disc.
Leave the rubber where it is.

Next up, a trip to Napa for this bulb (p/n 17037) and one other dead one. Then, gently insert the bulb and replace the plastic cover on the rotary switch.

It's the cigarette lighter. Take it out and into the house and you will see it has the exact same makeup as the headlight switch. You can easily practice your no damage technique on that. By the way, there's not even a bulb to worry about hurting in that lighter ****.
Good luck.

You guys. No need to go through all the trouble of the duct tape, prying the cover off and pulling the bulb out. The **** pulls straight off leaving the light bulb exposed and in the socket. This is a 15 second DIY. I have replaced bulbs this way before. jhummel68 and I did it this way today. It takes longer to open the package of bulbs than to change it. You do have to pull a little hard and the **** only goes on one way with a groove. Easy.
