Default Excellence Values of 993s, what gives?

Hey Listers,

Just received my February 2010 Excellence magazine, it lists the values of the "911:1989-1998". Considering the last two 993s listed here or RL, a C2S for 52K another C2S asking 49.5K.

Compare that to the listed values for a 1998 in the magazine: "excellent C2S $33,738", a "so-so C2S" is according to Excellence worth only "$22,166"

It seems that the magazine, with the help from the economy is trying to drive prices down even further!

We must stick to our guns when we sell our 993s, and keep the values what they are really worth! Where do these people get their prices, from Kelleys Blue Book? Certainly not from the dealers in these Porsches!

Any comments?

Bert

Excellence has always been WAY OFF in terms of their values. At this point I wonder if Bruce Anderson has an agenda... His numbers are even lower than KBB, hehe. And there is always a thread on this topic every year in every forum when the values for that particular model are published in Excellence. Anyway, if Bruce can find those sub-$35K C2S in excellent condition I'll take 3 please.

This is one area where the magazine really needs to get with the program (Pete, are you listening?). Are there cars being sold within their parameters? Of course there are. I think that the "high" prices are out to lunch however. For every bargain basement car sold there seems to be another one on the other end of the spectrum. This applies to all 993 models. As the cars age, factors influencing price change a bit I think. Condition, history, and maintenance are probably more important than mileage these days. Of course "low-mile" cars (what justifies this could justify an entire thread) in completely original (unmolested) condition are getting harder to find and I can't see them getting much cheaper.

Yup, that's some crazy talk going on in that publication.

That's OK, no harm done - I don't think anyone knowlegeable puts much stock in the pricing tables.

Used to (rightly) drive the 944T guys nuts. 10 years ago (perhaps slight exagerration), Bruce had Excellent values for Excellent 944 Turbos around 10K. At the time, that was just silly and a disservice to enthusiasts. I lined up and tried to buy a six-pack!

Just tell Bruce it's not a Chevy... You can but a one year old Z06 for under 50k...But it's a Chevy... The price drops by the second.

Wow, just got the PCA valuation for my '95 C2 Cab and the "Low" value was $31k. I know that is really high by a good 10k and they are by different groups, but it would seem there would be some kind of consistency in the valuations...

Since we are all planning on keeping ours until we die (and maybe some are going a step further and will be buried with them), I don't think the valuation matters...It only matters to one that is planning to sell.

At the very least, insurance premiums will be lower...

Valuation matters, and can be required, if you wanted stated value insurance and you live in certain states.

I had to have my car appraised ($350) by a licensed appraiser that was acceptable to the insurance company).

However, having it done avoids having to fight with the insurance company over value in the event of a claim.

BA's numbers have no basis in reality or empirical research. He comes up with "valuations" by using his imagination and some magic markers. They are to be ignored.

The market value is what people are paying. Looking at the posted prices online the prices in general are listed quite a bit higher.
I paid high thirties from Holt for a 96 coupe with 45K...I went into paying more than market because it was convenient, had LIKE NEW sport seats and other desireable options one owner history and Very good conditon. Not everyone will pay the dealer premium but I doubt cars are selling anywhere near what Bruce Anderson says.
What have others paid, I wonder?

It speaks to the credibility of the publication or lack thereof when these market values are so far off. What other errors are contained within the pages of Excellence? I have owned 5 different 993s and the Excellence values were not even in the ballpark of what I paid or what I sold them for.

It looks like C2S values dropped by $10K in the last year according to Excellence whereas everything else only dropped by a few hundred.

I'm not sure what is going on with Excellence. That particular issue takes a couple of cheap shots at the 993. I was kinda annoyed.

Default letter writing?

I know there have been a few bought and sold recently, (Wheeze, et.al)...It might be interesting to get those who have been IN THE MARKET one way or the other to write Excellence...perhaps they (BA) can write a retraction. Plus, did you see the bias comment on 993 vs 997? Not that there is ANYTHING about the 997 I would turn my back on, but hey...newest and most affordable P you can afford should not "dis" a whole generation of car that has a very strong following.
