Default Thinking of selling my '97 993 C4S

I've been thinking of selling my 993 for the past few months. I absolutely love it, but i simply don't drive it enough. I purchased it three years ago with 25k miles and when I put her away this winter, for a little R&R in the garage, the odometer had just touched 36k miles. My fear is she is turning into a garage queen as I'm starting to get concerned about putting more mileage on (and I have another Pcar to drive). I know it's silly, but people will still pay a premium for the right car with low mileage (I know mine isn't super low, but it is low).

Right now, I'm thinking there is still pretty good value given the low mileage, factory options (motor sound, aluminum package including dials, sills, brake and shifter, full leather, 8 way seats (both sides), crested headrest, 6 disc changer), overall condition and a fairly rare color combo (forest metallic green w/ cashmere interior).

I would be interested in hearing thoughts on my plan to sell the 993 for whatever premium she'll command and use the proceeds to purchase more of a "driver" that I won't mind racking up the miles on and using the extra $$$ for some choice mods and banking the remainder. Any thoughts on value? What might I be able to pick up a similar 993 w/ higher mileage (say 60k to 70k mileage)?

The best pictures I have are still the ones that Willhoit used to advertise it (purchased from him in Oct. '06). In addition to the options listed above, she has four new shoes (Sumi HTR ZIIIs) w/less than 3k miles, a complete service history and looks as good if not better than the pictures above.

Thanks!!!

John

The sell/buy an older strategy could be tricky, no? Very nice bait,,, the "full leather" 36k mi C4S but a sell/buy differential needs to be what to work? $15K?

Nice car ~

A quick search on cars.com shows the list price for a similar S at ~$55K.

A C2 w/ 70-80K miles is ~$26-30K.

I would figure selling price to be 10% less than list. Maybe 15% (or 20%?) less for the S, depending on circumstances. I could be wrong on all that though, as the economy starts to churn again.

$15k seems like a reasonable number, $10k could work too.

I'm starting to see higher mileage 993s (with good service history) in the 30's and I'm still seeing low mileage 993s in the 40s (even low 50s for super low miles) so I don't think I'm too far off that number?

I have the same thoughts, the only way this works is if you sell this C4S for 42K (not everyones cup of tea for color) and buy a NB with 70K for 25K(If you are hoping to get another WB car then forget it, the math won't work) then spend 5K to get it right and viola, you have "saved" 10K to bank after the taxes unless you do this through a dealer. Not a huge amount of money, plus the new NB car may need more work quicker so the differential goes down even more.

As far as premium goes 36K miles isn't going to get you much because it isn't considered low miles to most collector types. Your best bet is to simply drive the wheels off of that car and sell it for 35K when it has 80K miles on it.

Disclaimer - I pulled every number directly out of my *** and if they are wrong then my reasoning is as well.

My $.02 worth. Don't bother. No matter how thorough a PPI would be on the replacement car, you can plan on spending at least $2k - $4k to get the older car into the condition you will demand. So do the math. Sell your car, buy another. Don't know what the sales tax is in your state - but you say "N/E US" so my guess at least a 6% sales tax. So even if you get $15k differential, you'll spend another 6% of the
$15k differential on sales tax. Say you get $45k, and spend $30k. That's another $1,800 in sales tax, plus the $2k - $4k "restoring" the new (older) car. So you're now down to about a $10k differential. And that's assuming you actually get $15k more than what you spend.

The market right now for "higher end" goods is terrible.

I say hold on to the "gem" you have now. Drive it and don't worry about the miles.

Yes, yes and yes. When ya walk through the matrix of "what if's" What if you took one step at time starting with advertised the C4S in the $52K (plus) neighborhood? The C4S car just might scratch someone's itch... I'm just saying.

There are many a Euro buyer on the Rennlist... Gotta Luv a strong Euro... Maybe advertise in the Germany rag Auto, Motor und Sport?? Couple of nice pictures, a link to Schenker Logistics, etc. etc. make it easy for the Euro buyer to start thinking "how do I get that 993 that I luv"...

PS., Sheee it, that 993 could find its way in the belly of a Lufthansa 747 Cargo headed for FRA faster than you can say Over Head Camshaft in German. (obenliegende Nockenwelle)

The problem with the high asking prices is that the cars do not sell. This is all wishful thinking of the market 2-3 years ago. Your car is not low mileage anymore: GET IT OUT AND DRIVE IT!!!

OP, if you're in a position to do so, maybe the best option is to keep the S for awhile (and possibly pursue the euro angle,) until the selling price becomes more attractive, and find a driver in the meantime.

Easy for me to say, I have only one garage spot and thus my C2 is my only vehicle.

On the other hand, if you want to keep a 993 for the next 10+ years (as I do,) why not make the S your driver now and enjoy it for all it's worth.

Love the exterior color - very rare.

Just keep it and rack up the miles.

I'm looking but in no hurry. It wouldn't be my first choice of color but far from last. It seems like the asking prices of the wide bodied cars are not that far from TTs - I can't understand that. I would pay $60-65K for a TT before I would think of spending over $50K for an S (yes, I had a '98 C2S and have driven TTs - there's no comparison in my mind). What am I missing? There's more than $10-15K difference, don't you think?
Nice looking car - agree with the request for current interior photos and build sticker.

I love the color. And call me a nut, but I think 36k miles is low. But then again my daily driven NB has 151k miles now, so my perspective is skewed. Why not try selling her, and finding a higher mileage TT that you can feel comfortable clocking more miles for similar $$?
