Default DIY Third Brake Light (95 model)

I took my basket handle off about a year ago, and decided with the number of bad drivers around (and all the lawyers) I should have a third brake light. I didn't want to spend $200 (or whatever it cost) for the 96+ brake light (besides, it would cover my Crimson Nape decal), so I got a strip of red led's and made my own. The wiring was already there under the rubber trim. I used shrink wrap to finish the ends and it is held in place with killer death outdoor 2-sided tape. It has been installed for over 8 months w/o any problems. I don't remember the exact cost, but the led's were around $15 shipped. Just thought I'd post pics in case there are others out there with more time than money these days. I still have plugs in the holes from the basket handle; have not built up the courage to attempt to weld/fill/paint the deck myself, so I keep waiting on $ to fall out of the sky.

I like it! Can you get a profile picture to see how it "sticks out" from the roof lip?

Also, did the LEDs come preassembled in the tube or did you have to make that?

Why would anyone want to make their car slower and handle poorly by taking off the basket handle?

I took mine off because I was sick of people walking past my car and just picking it up and carrying it off

here is the pic from the side. it fits very nicely into the curve of the body above the window and does not stick out much at all. the second pic is from further back so you can see it.

I got it from a place called Apex Lighting and there website is lightingfx.com. It was 2' long at $2.95 per foot in May 2008. The led's are pre-assembled, but it did take a little skill to trim the wires to solder the connectors on.

As for the poorer handling from removing the obviously superior aerodynamic basket handle, I am counting on the massive weight savings to make up the difference

I wonder if mounting that on the inside might work, too. Covered with black tape so you don't illuminate your back seat like a brothel every time you stop.

Thanks for posting. I took off the basket handle light a few years ago and always meant to get the roof light but never did. I just tell people its an 84 with a body kit.

Mate,

You are a genius. This must go in the 993 HALL OF FAME as one of the cleverest, cheapest and most asthetically appealing modifications I have seen in the 8 years Ive been trawling this site weekly.

Its light, easily replaced, stops watermarks running down the rear window from mounting point adhesive (on the factory set up) and its LED so gives better light and more "lit" coverage.

I also personally believe that its asthetically far superior to the 1995+ factory piece which IMHO is not styled to complement the car and looks like it was an afterthought (which apparently it was). I have the early 1993/4 rear light which sits perfectly flush with the roof and c pillars but they made it only for 6 months and if I had to replace it (impossible to get from Porsche) I would go with your solution!

BRILLIANT!

Looks great Bob! I am also still without the CHMSL after removing my basket handle. I had looked around for an LED strip I liked, but hadn't found anything to date.

Pics of yours, Macca?

This is very clever and clandestine at the same time. It’s truly out-of-the-box creativity. I may try this too.

Dayum, that's outstanding! A lot of 964 owners will be interested in this as well.
