I have the nr gauges in aluminum and I would recommend them over OEM because all the idiot lights are hidden - they only show up when the light comes on. The look is much cleaner.

Here is my set of aluminum gauges with aluminum gauge rings. The car came that way from the PO. Although I like the way it looks I'm actually thinking of replacing them with the stock black ones. I'm just more used to them.
If anyone's interested in a trade for the gauges (or gauges and rings + cash), send me a PM

I had North Hollywood Speedometer (www.nhspeedometer.com) refinish mine in white -- around $400 for all five gauges. I had my mechanic pop them out of the dash, Fed-Ex them to NHS and they were back in a week.
The factory gauges are made of clear plastic with black paper coating (which started flaking off on mine). The NHS approach removes the black paper coating and replaces it with white silk screening (essentially paint). The warning lights glow through the white silk screening, with a little "bleed through" of the light from one warning light to the adjacent warning lights. However, unlike with the NR gauge faces, the factory backlighting of the gauges continues to work properly, without having to mess with adding additional bulbs (see the discussion in the pcarworkshop link above). I guess there is no perfect solution -- that's why the Porsche factory silver-faced gauges have the cut-outs.
Unless you are extremely skilled, I wouldn't risk trying to do it yourself -- not worth ruining a $400+ gauge by breaking the needle or mangling the outside flange in order to save a couple of bucks.
Note that, if you swap out gauges for those from another car, you'll be changing the odometer in your car (which is in the speedometer), which is something you would need to explain at DMV vehicle inspections and when you try to sell the car.

Changing the gauge faces is no rocket science if you take your time. The guts of the speedometer will have to be swapped if you change the gauge so the correct mileage shows. A piece of cake

I have TechArt silver gauges installed by no other than the Meistro Robin S. himself.
It is "Fantastico" IMHO.
I will try to upload some pix later for ya. It has orange ambience at night!
