Tail of the Dragon trip late March OFFICIAL SCHED. PG 6
My wife has informed me that we are going to Gatlinburg TN the end of March next year ('10) to hang out at a friend's vacation pad for a week or so.
I am thinking of towing the car up there and hitting the "Tail" while there. Anyone interested in making a RL meeting and drive out of it?
I think she's talking about being there somewhere during the period of March 22-3 until the 30th.

I'd love to. Can't get enough of the Dragon or the nearby Cherohala Skyway. Both should be very quiet in late March. I just posted some pictures on the Cherohala here recently (993 included in photos of course) while doing the beautiful fall leaves touring. The only possible problem you might have would be snow. Believe it or not late March can be the final snowfall time of the year here in the mountains. Everyone still talks about the great blizzard here in '93 which happened in March. Also make sure I-40 is re-opened or you will have a nice little detour. A major rockslide closed I-40 last week and they anticipate 3 months minimum to repair. If a bad winter season that 3 months could turn into 6 months real easy. Back in '97 I-40 was closed 5 months for the same thing.

I heard about that. I was thinking of going up by way of Charlotte NC and skipping 40 all together.
Maybe you'd be interested in putting a route together for us? I've never been up that way, and just figured I'd hit the area as it came, but if you know of something special........

Be careful of the Dragon!! Be very, very careful!!! Not of the road but of the troopers. They are everywhere and monitor the speed and crossing the yellow line very closely. Also there should not be an issue on I-40, as this is south of that. And if traveling westbound on 40 in NC, you would exit about 20 miles east of this.
BTW, there are many other roads in that area and surrounding that are as good, if not better, (just don't have the same publicity agent as The Dragon) that have alot better twistys and a lot less men in blue.

When the time gets closer and if I-40 is closed still we will give you a great route to Gatlinburg through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. You will be able to exit off I-40 before the rock slide area. Very scenic and very little time lost. Once you are in Gatlinburg then I-40 will not be an issue for the Dragon or the Skyway.

Well the dates above are pretty well set (within a day), so if guys can make it, great, we'll plan a RL meeting place, maybe make a lunch/drive thing out of it.
Those reading this: make sure to post in the thread and I'll PM everyone as the time approaches.

I've been there twice, both in low-traffic times of the early spring. Had a ball, never saw a trooper.
If there are other roads in the area I'd be interested in checking those out.
At this early date I can only say tentative until it gets closer, but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it.
