Don't forget your oil cap!
I just posted this over at Pelican. You would not believe all the smoke dumping out of the back of my car.

I did this 2 months ago. If it wasn't for the inner voice it would be have been the biggest "FACK" that my neighbor's kids heard since that other embarrasing thing I did a while back that I won't post here.

Clean up the engine bay & you will be fine.
I topped off the C4 before a PCA tour, we drove about 50mi, then hit the back roads & took a hard left, look in the rear view & a HUGE white cloud of smoke is there! I shut down & pull over.
My cap didn't seat right, it was kind of half on, & spilled oil all over the place, it was a mess. I cleaned up what I could, then started the car & checked the level, it was fine.
In the end, I just made the people behind me pucker, & made me clean my engine bay again.

Dunnit also.....improperly replaced cap after doing an oil change.
Called my mechanic in a panic from the side of the road.
Aside from the embarrassment, the worst part was getting oil all over the right side of my fresh & clean, engine bay after having the motor dropped for a top end job only weeks earlier.

Same thing happened to one of my students at VIR last week-end. We're sitting on the grid, waiting to go out in his M3 and smoke starts billowing out of the engine compartment. He pops the hood and oil is all over the place...oil cap sitting there on the valve cover. Red-faced and half-way through the session, he gets it cleaned up and we're back on track.

Dunnit too ... huge cloud of smoke as I blasted away from a toll booth - then the embarrassment of all the other cars then coming past me as I limped along praying I had not just blown my engine ... doh!!

I've done it. Now, whenever I take off the cap, I place it directly on top of the latch, so there's no way I can close the lid without knowing that I forgot the cap. I do this on all my cars now.

Yup, BTDT with a 1/2-on cap. Up a steep hill and that was all she wrote. Mess+embarrassment=closer attention paid
