What do you want to know?
I've had several Ducatis and would not hesitate getting a Monster if I were looking for that type of bike. The 696 is fine if you aren't a very experienced rider but I'd go for an 1100 or a used 1000. The torque of the air cooled 2v twins is addictive much in the same way as an air cooled flat six.

I've never had a Monster but I've had a 900SS and a 996S track bike.
The 696 seems a good bike although I haven't kept up with them in a while. With 80hp it's plenty of poke for Houston. For performance bikes I look at the suspension more than the motor because it makes all the difference in the world, IMO.
I think they have been getting really solid reviews.

I have a 2007 S4R. Spectacular. I can't think of any motorcycle that combines raw power with such handling finesse. Braking is superb and the dry clutch sound will put a smile on your face at every light. I love the aesthetics of a naked bike and the monster is the original. Very reliable if you strictly adhere to the maintenance schedule.

I only had experience with 900 super light but love Ducati's V-twin engine. The Monster is a very cool bike and I wouldn't worry too much about engine displacement and HP.... 700cc is plenty.

I'd stay away from a small displacement Ducati. You WILL get tired of it and eventually want a bigger bike. The small displacement Duc's have poor resale values compared to the larger ones. You can probably buy a one or two year old big bike for the same price as a new 696. My next bike purchase will be a Paul Smart replica (1000cc cafe racer look).....

I'm casually trying to sell my Ducati ST2. I know it's not a Monster but a great bike if you value utility. Plus it has plenty of power.
