I fear the clutch effort will scare my wife off from driving my 993...tt pressure plate, rs flywheel and clutch is my setup.

My then girlfriend (now wife of 7 years) drove my 88 Targa, 78 930, 91 C2 when we were dating but thought nothing of it. A few times a year, especially when I travel for a week or more, I have her starting the 993 up and taking it around the block.

About 2 weeks ago, she took the driver's seat again and I asked that she thrash it around a bit, grab it by the scruff of the neck. Guess what? Now we're in the market for 996 C4S for her.

My advise: don't do it unless you're prepared to fork out for another car. Then again, you did say "girlfriend", right? ;-)

Yes, girlfriend, a very special one at that. And she knows I'm not in the market for another Porsche, as my son is in college and is sucking away every available nickel.

I'm alway doing something on the car, and I think she's seen it up on jackstands in my garage probably 25% of the time she's known me. So she knows I love to work on the car, and she knows how much I enjoy driving it like it's supposed to be driven.

She's been to two autocrosses with me, and one DE. She's never expressed any desire to do either, not even as a passenger. I offered, but she said no thanks, and enjoyed watching from the sidelines.

Her drive is going to happen in a few days, when I get the car back together (search "exploding rear window" for the story, which was replaced on Friday, now waiting to put the rear deck back in before her big day).

Thanks for all the comments, we've both chuckled while reading them. To those that have asked for pics to make sure she's "worthy", we've been negotiating on which one to post... I have my favorites and she's warming up to the idea though she's rejected most of my selections. I'm getting close to the point of posting the one I like and apologizing profusely when she sees it.

And to those that have said "NO WAY" to her drive, I have tortured her with your comments. She's been pointing out all the posts in her favor, and I've been pointing out all the ones against it. We've enjoyed every post, and have been trash talking each other since the first reply. Thanks to all for replying!!!

1. There are only a few thousand 993's.
2. There are billions of women.
3. Therefore, she will be much easier to replace than the 993.

My 19 year old daughter drove my car last year, and she did just fine. She thought the clutch was quite deep and heavy.

I think it's encouraging that a girlfriend or SO is interested enough in a Porsche that she wants to drive it.

When we bought our 993 cab, my wife was "skeptical." She likes and appreciates cars, just was not sure we needed a 14 year old car for a weekend "fun car." Fast forward 9 months and my wife was in the market for a new car. We tested everything we could think of, M3, 6-Series, SL's, SC 430 Lexus, Inifinit G37, etc every somewhat "sporty" coupe we could think of. And after nearly every test drive, she said "nice car, but I like the 993 better". Then she test drove a 997 and the smile on her face when she finished left no doubt that there would be another Porsche in the garage--and now there is.

She still loves the 993 cab on weekends/sunny days--and even chooses it over her 997 soemtimes. Definately let her drive it, but when she is out there, start clearning out a space in the garage for another pcar!

When I was shopping for a 993, I was not going to pull the trigger unless my wife agreed to drive it (as a 3rd car) and enjoy it.

If she was not 'into' it. I would have just bought one for my DD and reduced the out of pocket expenses for the 3rd car.

Absolutely let her try it. My wife hates the 993. Loves her Boxster. Drives the Z06 like a storm trooper...

Better to have a GF that is interested in the car than one who hates it. When I had my 968 in college I had mixed reviews but most of them hated it (rough, low and loud). The ones that loved it were much more fun to be around...they were usually rough and loud as well....

My wife drives mine anytime I'm not. And my daughter and I discussed her driving off to college in her own 993 (I liked the idea, she didn't, but she's 13 and she doesn't like much of what I say right now).

Short story.....

About ten years back my neighbors son was learning how to drive and his father had done a pretty good job on teaching him the basics. We were sitting around one evening and he mentioned he needed to learn how to drive a stick shift car... so I took him out and taught him in the Porsche. He's still grinning.

As to your girfriend driving your Porsche. Of course she should. You should teach your SO how to drive a stick, how to ride a motorcycle and anything else she wants to do... EXCEPT how to shoot. And if you have to do that, make sure the weapon she has access to is sighted high and to the left......
