I POD information/installation
I was planning on start using a IPOD in my 993 and wanting to know if I should have a new head unit installed or have a cable hook up to the OEM Porsche head unit. ( if it is possible ) I don't really know much about this stuff but my kids are telling me to do it. I was thinking about satelite radio. Please help me with some information on the best way to go. If I should have to change the head unit which ones should I be looking at and buy. How much should I plan on paying for the unit and installation. Thanks for your help.....

I went with a aftermarket JVC. I really like all the features, (bluetooth, USB, IPOD,HD RADIO, DVD) . Satelite didnt interest me since I had it on some previous vehicles and was not impressed. Went with the HD Radio since its FREE!

Shu, thanks for your reply. I see that your head unit is a JVC AVX77 could you let me know the cost of the unit and installation cost. Does your IPOD cable go to the glove box? A ball park number on the $$$ would help me know if they are going the try and ripe me off. You can PM if you would like. Thanks...

a guy on another Board I frequent got one of these, it is supposed to work with the CDR210 that most 993's came with (or CR210) . His car has a CDR220 which came with the 9x6's and he was very happy with it

John, I purchased everything from Wooferetc.com. They were real helpful with any technical info. The wiring harness came from Crutchfield and will only work with non hifi cars. the cost of the JVC headunit was $$489 plus the HD Radio module was around $150. The harness was $9.00 I installed everything myself so other than a few wires and connector costs, my time was somewhat cheap. As for the USB cable, I ran it into the glovebox. You can connect your ipod to it or I currently use a 8gig flash drive and play my MP3s from it. Everything is controlled by the touch screen headunit. The DVD is a fun feature also.
Oh, also this headunit has a decent amount of power to run my Focal speakers. I dont think I will install an amp.......

I have an Alpine head unit and the iPod wire just comes out from under the dash as you can see in the pic. Although the iPod is not in the pic I lay it on it's side on the floor and the fire ext. holds it.

I prefer the look of the OEM radios so I went with the CDR 220 setup direct from Becker. They also have a Aux option set of adapters that allow a Ipod to be connected. You need to buy another (cheap) cable to connect the Ipod but it works great. You can only have one other "source" connect to the 220, those are either a CD changer OR the Ipod connection, you can't have both but then with an Ipod why would you need the CDR?
If you decide to check out the CDR 220 option user Chuck W has posted all the info you need to know on the subject, if the search is working.

another way to go is to have an adaptor hard wired into your current radio. you just set the radio station to, say, 87.7FM and at that frequency the ipod will work. i had a BMW 840ci and the radio in it was more integrated and so didn't lend itself to the aftermarket look. it made this the way to go. the technician ran the hook-up wire up through the ashtray, which i didn't use anyway, and the wire was out of sight when the ipod was not in use. of course, the other end of the operation occured in the back of the radio behind the dash. it cost $100 to do this and it sounded great. i don't know where you'd have the hook-up wire come out in a porsche- the glove box?

I had a look at Shu's setup at the Mike J BBQ this weekend, and the setup is sweet. Very nice clean lines, and this is a unit I would definitely consider for my car (since my current setup sucks big time).
Cheers,
Mike

I have the same Traffic Pro as Stealth but put the IPOD in the glove box. I also have sirus/xm installed so had to install a tiny button switch in the glove box (from JBL) that allows up to 3 sources to share the aux input. The switch is a little touchy and I'll looking for another solution that is more reliable.
