Default Exploding rear window claims another victim

Me.

Drove to restaurant, all's well.

Walk out of restaurant, glass is shattered.

Now I need an experienced glass installer in Cincinnati. Any recommendations?

Sorry to read that Jeff.....Curious if anyone has figured out what may be the cause of this tendency?

Rear screen heater wasn't on.

It was a decent warm evening, very comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, so we decided to get an outside table at the restaurant. So temp was 75-80F I'd guess.

While ordering some clouds rolled in, temp dropped 10F in just a minute, the wind started to blow hard, and we almost went inside. But once the few clouds passed over us, it got back to nice again.

Not sure what part of any of that was the key to explosion.

Not that I know of, lol.

And we sat outside so I could keep an eye on the car and enjoy the sun.

Not one person or even a car got within 50 ft of where I parked.

Just bad luck. Now removing all the glass from the car, and looking for an experienced installer.

Oh my! I really find all this talk of "exploding glass" so hard to believe (in terms of "shocking" to me, not that I doubt you and others). Drastic temp changes just don't seem likely enough an explanation. Puzzling! Sorry to hear of it though ...it does suck. At least you weren't driving.

Hi Jeff,
There's a great guy up here in Cleveland, name is Jerry and he owns Comet Glass (216) 531-9191. He replaced the windshield seal in my 76 911S, knew to use only OEM seal, top notch job at a reasonable price.
Best regards,
Don

Default A pic...

I have the glass installer lined up, they do all the Porsche dealers in town.

I ordered the glass and trim through Sunset, saved my $150 bucks over the local dealers. Ordered three weeks ago, it will be here tomorrow. It had to be ordered from the Fatherland, so hopefully FedEx is gentle and it gets here fine.

I can't get it into the shop for a few weeks since I'm out on vacation, but by mid-July my baby should be back on the road.

You might check with the local police to see if any other windows were reported broken. Several years ago I got into my American made car, closed the door and and the rear window shattered. Thought it was a defect until I found out about 40 other windows in the local area were shot out by kids with a BB gun. They caught the little ****** and they paid for the window. If the police have reports of other windows in the area you might have an insurance comprehensive claim.

This has been an issue on some cars. Tempered glass really lets loose when it is not evenly stressed.
In other discussions on the subject the wiring to the rear defroster has been a suspected stress point.
Notice how the glass is broken out right up to that area. Might be worth revisiting with a search.

My deductible is $2000, so not much help there.

As far as uneven stresses, that could be, but I wouldn't read too much into the pics I took. They were after 5 miles of road bumps on the way home. At the restaraunt where it happened the window was just cracked. First bump, it looked like the pic.

Maybe the reason for this is the infamous brake light wiring short problem? It has been discussed several times here on Rennlist. Maybe check this before you go the gremlin, vandal or sniper path.:-)
The wiring for the third brake light is embedded in the glass, mid top side, the wiring to this tends to short by wear and tear and gets very warm. This cause the tempered glass to go boom...
Your pictures could indicate this cause, but tempered glass may shatter in many ways when stressed.

If I recall correct the wiring is prone to short and get warm even without the fuse blowing.
Regards,
Tore
