Here is another test drive of the new Porsche Boxter Spyder: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/...ontent-block=0
Regarding the roof:
"We weren’t able to test it for rain resistance but can report that wind noise behind your head is authentically 1950s Speedster"
The Verdict:
The Boxster Spyder is mixed bag: stacks of fun but with a very narrow appeal. On the one hand it’s genuinely better to drive than the standard car having been on a proper diet, it’s faster and more focused and just looks and feels that bit more special than the Boxsters you see every day. If you lived in sunny California and had another car in the garage for sensible duties, we’d say go for it, providing you can stomach the brittle ride. But for those of us subjected to a more varied, okay awful, climate, the Spyder will remain a Lotus Elise-style Sunday fun car at best, and the Boxster S (plus a few choice options) still the best way to spend your money.

CarAndDriver.com's "2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder - First Drive Review: Hot damn, the Boxster gets even better."
given that the Boxster is already a convertible, “spyder” is simply a marker that this iteration is unique.
(A version of the Cayman could wear the spyder badge properly, but what sense would that make?)

AutomobileMag.com's "First Drive: 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder"
The two-piece roof is a fairly involved task for one person, requiring you walk back and forth between driver and passenger side multiple times, but the reality is that most owners will likely leave the top off for the majority of the time.
The ten-spoke 19-inch wheels also save weight over the 18-inch wheels of a Boxster S.

goAuto.com's "First look: Porsche’s harder-core Boxster Spyder -- Faster, lighter, more serious Porsche Boxster emerges ahead of LA debut"
Designed to appeal directly to Californians’ penchant for stripped-out ‘Speedster’ versions of the 911 and Porsche’s iconic 356

I saw a truckload of white Boxster Spyders at the factory last month. I was in Stuttgart to see the new museum and also got a factory tour, which was amazing (the only thing more amazing would have been seeing them build 911s the old fashioned way before they went water-cooled). They were being loaded onto the truck to be transported to some auto show. The cars in the pics above are exactly like the ones I saw. The Spyders all had that weird top with the strappy things. Too bad we weren't allowed to bring cameras on the tour! That reminds me, I have to post my pics of the museum....

^^ Wow. You've seen 'em in the flesh ... at the mecca,
the factory!
