I'm about to start a new job, and I want to give a nice thank you gift of wine to my old boss. I like the presentations of 2-3 bottles in the nice wooden cases, but have no idea who does that and where.

I remember several people here are big Cakebread fans. This looks close to what I need. Are they that good? I'd rather have all reds:

When I'm picking gift wines, I just go to my local specialty store and ask them what's good. They're always up on the latest and greatest.

I bought a bunch of these through an on-line seller called Winning Gifts.com and have been giving them out to my friends who are very much into wines, many have 500+ bottle wine cellars. It's a great pre-dinner social activity to crack open a few bottles of red wine to run through the device and run blind taste tests on. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually enhanced the wine as soon as you poured it through the device.

I would go with a bottle of Belle Glos (Clark and Telephone or Las Alturas Vineyards). It is a Pinot Noir made by the son of the family that makes Caymus Cabernet.

Every person I have ever given this to has said it was the best Pinot Noir they ever had...

Retail price is between $49.99-64.99 per bottle. So far the 2004 is my favorite, but tougher to find.

Silver Oak Cab (cabrio?) is an excellent wine and can be hard to find. If they like/know cabernet's this would be a thoughtful appreciated gift. I love it.

Great specific wine recommendations. Do any of them come in the nifty gift boxed sets?

I realize that this presents some compromises for that added worthlessness, but this is a gift.

Your local wine store should be able to help you out with gift presentation. They may or may not have wooden boxes but should have very nice cardboard boxes. This would allow you to pick wines of your choosing. My wife's 40th is this week and I bought her a bottle of '03 and '04 Silver Oak Napa and a bottle of '04 Silver Oak Alex from my local wine store. They assembled the bottles in a presentable cardboard box with natural colored straw on the inside. Or perhaps they could set you up with a basket presentation. Either way, don't limit yourself because of a nifty wooden box.
