Default How tough is rear wheel bearing replacement

I've checked out the DIY on P-car. It looks pretty straight forward. I'd rather not buy the special bearing removal tool. Anyway, I just wanted to hear from someone who has done it - how bad a job is it and how much time.

Thanks
Jeff

It is pretty straightforward with the tool. About 3 hours per side? Not sure how you would do it without the tool.

I have the EBS tool on loan from a Rennlister. Somehow I thought I'd replace my fronts this winter...

How far are you from Baltimore?

About two hours...Any idea how much the tool costs?

I believe it's around $300.

Jeff, The EBS tool was $135 a couple of years ago. I did the front bearing two years ago on the 964. It was a couple of hours and not that bad at all. The stealer wanted $450. Your welcome to borrow mine. I'm in Warrington.

Shawn

If you're willing to loan it to me that would be great. I'd be more than happy to "rent" it and offset your costs.

Also keep in mind that you need a big torque wrench (339 ft-lbs) for the axle nut.

What are the signs of a bad bearing. My car has been making a whirling sound in the rear as I roll down the street and just the other dat started making a clunking sound. The faster I went the louder the noise. Any ideas? Sorry to highjack the thread but I am nervous!

Torque is 330 ft-lb or something like that, will have to review my notes. And yes, it does take a big torque wrench. Bought a 4-footer that goes to 600 fl-lbs.

I did the write up on p-car.com, so can attest it's not bad at all with the right tools. And I paid about $130 for the EBS tool. I've shipped it out before to other Rennlisters, so if others can't help let me know.

Get it on flat ground, and push it back and forth (engine off). Mine made all sorts of noise that you could hear coming directly from the bearing.
