What to do about brake calipers
Hi All,
Another question seeking comments from the collective Rennlisters' wisdom. If I want to get my brake calipers painted, but don't want to take them off myself because of 1)time, 2) lack of tools 3) nagging wife 4)etc.... I can have the shop take them off, but what do I do in the mean time while the calipers are getting prepped and painted? I assume the process won't be done in 1 day, right?
Would I just leave the car there for the duration of the process? Thanks for the help.

Why not just DIY it. You can do with the calipers on the car actually. Just spend a little bit of time with the masking tape and it will be fine.

Yes it was extremely hard to get the old paint off. You really need to take them off to get all the paint off. It isn't to hard, but it does take time and patience, but I am kind of a perfectionist when it comes to that stuff. It is really cheap and inexpensive to DIY.

Mine was cracking (the clear). The G2 comes with some decent brake parts cleaner that softened it up some as well. I just took a wire wheel bit on the end of a cordless drill and went to town on the caliper. Then I sanded it to smooth it out as much as I could, then applied the G2 paint and put on the new decals. Easy DIY and well worth it! Looks great. I wouldn't worry too much about sanding scratches or marks from the wire wheel though, the paint is so thick it will fill it in easily and then lay flat. I was worried about it but it came much better than I could have hoped for.

easy DIY. Here's a pic of the T-Reg's I did several years ago with VHT spray cans w/o ever removing the calipers. Just sand enough to get it (relatively) smooth and tape off whatever you don't want painted. The brush on stuff would probably be easier if you don't want to remove the calipers.

Mine had several large cracks and chips in the clear coat and even in the paint... So I had mine re-done, but went a different route.
Removed them, and sent them to Powerdertech Plus in Orange Park, FL (no affiliation)... They sandblasted and then powdercoated them... Then got a set of stencils from Rennline and some high-temp white paint... and ta-da... essentailly brand new calipers, that look great, and are totally, totally clean. The whole process took about a week and about $350, but well worth it.
I considered the re-paint-in-place approach, but after looking at the backside of the caliper, it becomes apparent that its not an ideal approach. It's a good over-the-winter project.

I don't feel you have to do the back side of the calipers unless you routinely have your car on a hoist to admire your work - I masked that off and just sprayed the front, you'll be fine. You also don't need to remove all the paint, just sand and steel wool the surface so that it's nice and smooth, no sheen apparent.
