Default RS-Style Shift Rod \ Golden Rod went Platinum

For those new to the tale of the Golden Rod, see here: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=35947

We had toyed with the idea of using a more expensive joint by Apex (for a "deluxe" version) and finally got it done. Some asked and were curious to see if this would be worth the extra $$ so we gave it a try.

It's neat but I do not see any advantage over the standard u-joint in this application.

That said, this one is now in my 993tt and it is just plain awesome. What a difference. I had a modified stock rod with the rubber still in it but stiffened using a piece of steel cut/drilled to fit. This RS-Style rod is very noticeably better. Much more precise.
Again, I am certain there is not way I could tell the difference between this and the standard joint. It is cool though

Come on Spring!

Mark,

Looks great! Now I've got "shift-rod" envy......

Anyway, I guess you guys solved the heat buildup issue during welding..... excellent!

Yup, lots of dipping to cool... still, it is hard on the joint. The larger steering joints would be easier to deal with. I might pin it to the rod next time.

So you got the golden, the platinum...... When comes the diamond rod or the cheaper version, sterling silver.

Mark:

Do I need the Platinum Rod instead of Golden? City driving only no track. Just curious.

Can I trade my year-old factory RS rod for one of these?

In my opinion, there is no advantage to spending over twice the $ on this joint... other than the cool factor

hey Jim
no, we stopped making them some time ago
the Golden Rod is by far more popular and the PR was overkill... That and the price of the joint for it went way up. Nice piece though

there is already a boot over the shift shaft and joint on the GR. And its protected by the under panels

Interesting, but I have a related question:

I purchased a 993 with the Goldenrod installed by the PO. My shifter is a bit too notchy..... to the point where I am seriously considering going back to stock. My plan is to open it up and inspect first.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Tony

Tony,

changing the shift rod won't cause or solve a notchy feel...
That said, the OE rod with the rubber may dampen it a little since the rubber/fiber disk "numbs" the shift feel.
other factors at play.... Gear oil or normal trans wear, usually particularly noticeable when cold
