Default What makes a Porsche part "RS"?

I should know this since my 993 came with an RS clutch but I don't. I do know RS on the Porsche cars stands for Renn Sport but I'm trying to find what determines an aftermarket part as being "RS". I see RS clutches, engine mounts, etc. and I see them for sale by several different companies. Is there one company that has the rights to manufacture them or is there a certain specification (e.g. %weight) they must meet? To make matters more confusing I see RS parts for everything from Fords to Subarus. What's the story?

I sure cannot explain what the other marques do with their branding but Porsche's RS models are limited edition versions made for track events, racing, and for some fast street use.

In most cases, the RS models are homologation specials so the FIA will permit these cars and their parts to be used for competition.

Porsche's RS components were designed for and unique to these cars. In the majority of cases, These "RS" parts are the factory items specific to these cars and while there are some "RS-like" parts, the vast majority were made for Porsche A.G. or Porsche Motorsports; Germany.

Now,......some of these factory RS parts are available to the aftermarket supply channels, but....they are all made by the same vendors (Sachs & Heigo, for example) that provide such items to the factory.

Got questions or need further clarification???? Call me,........

Thanks Steve. It's good to know if I buy a part labled "RS" for a Porsche, it's either a Porsche part or manufactured to their specifications.

Steve is correct (as always)... but to add a little clarity, Im not sure the message came through 100%..... A 993 RS is a specific model of car, much like the 997 GT3 is to the regular 997 today. While most parts were the same between the normal 993 and the 993RS, there were a bunch of parts that were different. Most (if not all) of these differences were aimed at lighter weight or more race car like performance. Notice I didnt say "better" performance. With every change there are trade offs, the 993RS was a track orinented car, not street.

Now a lot of aftermarket folks have taken that RS badge and used it to represent "high performance". For these, buyer beware...

So, technically... there is no such thing as an "RS" clutch.... rather, it is the clutch Porsche used on the 993RS (which was actually a 964 piece. part number 964-114-143-31)...

Hope that helps.

For real RS parts, I'd recommend contacting SunSet Porsche in Oregon, 800.346.0182 You can get the real deal parts for 15% over cost (just as for Excellence pricing). ....however, you usually have to wait be because many are not in stock and come from Germany.
