I never had a problem with my AC before - until I moved to Hawaii. On the other hand, I never used my AC everyday before - until I moved to Hawaii.
My AC stopped blowing cold - doesn't blow warm air, and it is a bit cooler than when it is off, but it isn't blowing cold like it did before. I've seen the great thread by Brian Smith (BS911) - COMPLETE A/C Diagnosis but would rather leave this one to the pros.
Being in Hawaii, there aren't a lot of independant shops for Porsches. And I've only seen 1 other 993 driving around here. Here's my question: Should I take my car to one of the Porsche independants? Or should I try to take it to an AC shop (there are a ton of AC shops that supposedly specialize in European cars). Any advice would be appreciated!
A recharge might get it working again if it's just low on gas. However, AC systems are closed systems and don't just get low unless there is a leak. Most shops will not recharge a leaky system because this is an environmental issue. You might find one that will just do a refill, but probably not a good shop. I'd take it to one of the shops you mention that specializes in AC/European cars if there is not a Porsche specialist shop around. There may very well be other issues besides a leak that is causing the poor cooling.

I hear you. I just dropped it off at a shop that specializes in AC/European cars. They're close by my office so it was convenient. They'll check the pressure to see if there's a leak.
Well, got the car back and the AC blows COLD again!! It was down to 20% charge. The guy left it on the vacuum and said that there didn't appear to be any drop in pressure so there shouldn't be any leaks.
We'll see how long it lasts. Thanks for everyone's help.
I have a '95 C4 and and from my conversations with the previous owner and the paperwork that came with the car a) the A/C has always been left turned on (the smaller frost symbol) since late '96 b) I've always done the same and c) Its only been regassed twice in 110,000 miles.
Now it will porbably leak!
My no 1 suspect is the temp sensor thats in your dash(I think left of the a/c controls in side a small slotted grill/Not hard at all to pull out and clean). I bet its covered/caked up in dust.
If that s fine, the "hard to get to" Ballast Resistor would be the second.
