My local dealer with guys on staff with air-cooled experience: 5 miles
My trusted independent who is honest, thorough and a true pro: 55 miles
Haven't been to the dealer in ages, even for an oil change.

I have no wrench anwhere near me I would trust. I have to drive an hour and a half, hop on a 1 and 1/2 hour ferry and drive another 20 minutes. I figure the entire trip, including waiting for ferries, is about 7 or eight hours and costs about $125 to $150, not including gas.
But it is nice to know that it is Mike J in Vancouver on the other end of the wrench.

And to you guys that wrench your own car, I'm jealous. I haven't the time nor the mechanical inclination. Lastly, to you folks that live within 15 minutes of your "wrench", ...very sweet luck!
And Trinitony, I could use our local place too for an oil change, but I wouldn't bring it there for much else.

About 6 miles from my house, maybe 3 from the office, very convenient. We have been going there for 20+ years (68 912 (Gone), 91 300CE (Son's car now), 80 911SC (new home in OK), 96 993.
If they moved, I would still take my car there, unless they moved more than an hour away, then I would switch to Callas.

I try to most of my own work, but sometimes, it worth it to pay some one else.
My trusted shops are all about 40-50mi away, & a big inconvenience, but they do the job right, & can be trusted. That makes it worth the trip.

I have 3 options within 20 minutes for service.
For body work I will travel an hour or more if they:
1. Do good work
2. Charge a fair price
3. Do not bull**** me
It is what it is but if there is a preoblem tell me. It the painter can't get to it on the day they thought I do not care. Just do good work.
