But then what?
Honestly, for my purposes, I feel like I'd have to get enough $$ for my car to get a brand new 998 (without adding any $$), and even then I'm not sure I'd do it. I certainly wouldn't want to add any money to trade "up" for a new model because I have just as much fun with my 993 (and it's actually more interesting to me in many ways than a new one would be).
The part I would like the best about a new 911 would be spec'ing it out-- colors, options etc.-- and anticipating its arrival. But even if I could get $50K+ for my car, I'm not sure I'd want to add $30K+ just to have fun with the ordering process. Basically, this is the decision I made when I went the 993 route in the first place.

I hear ya.
I'm amazed you managed to keep the car because I know that from an economic perspective Massachusetts is probably the worst state in which to go through a divorce.

My 993 C2S, BMW R100RS and my '94 Ducati 900SS all seem to be appreciating. I recently sold my 1960Lambretta Li150 for $3500 (had 1K into it).
Things with wheels are a better investment and a hell of a lot more fun that the market!

I think everyone thinks of them as nice cars...this just happens to be a thread that evolved into the current trend of increasing prices and decreasing availability. Besides, no matter how you slice it, a $60K car IS part of your asset list.

Ultimately, I didn't see it this way pre-internet, or going way back. Dude had a nice S, even an RS or a Carrera (a real castor oil burning one), and even though those are/were worth a lot, the money part just didn't come up.

I know what you said, and I was agreeing with you. But I was also making the point that a car is an asset.
If I had to buy a hold a particular car for life I would never buy it, no matter what it was. Way too big of a string attached for a car.
However, I did buy this car assuming it would depreciate like other Porsches (like a stone) and I was pleased to see that it did not.
