The thing I see preventing the 993 from becoming the "356" in 30 years in the near impossibility that will come with restoration of a 993.

Essentially, everything on the 356 is mechanical....Fuel, air, compression, spark and you're on your way. With the 993 about a gazillion electronic signals have to sent and processed in a specific manner or the key won't activate the starter.

Our cars are only 10-13 years old and already there is only one source for windshields (The factory). The prospect of facing a restoration that involves ODB II, ABS, DME, immobilizers and the like is enough to make one run screaming into the night. Not to mention that I can't see Porsche continuing to manufacture these parts forever.

Yes, they are machines and even old machines can be made to run in one fashion or another, but I'd hate to think about restoring a 30 year-old 993.

I was at Tim Holt's shop around 3 years ago and as I recall, he told me back then that he made more money selling 993's to German buyers than here. This isn't a new trend (perhaps just accelerated a bit) and I suspect that the dealers will sell to whoever is buying.

I think this trend has already thinned out availability for some models.

I've been "casually" searching for an '89 Speedster for several months and they are darn near impossible to find. Researching this a little bit, I learned that the '89 Speedster had become a desired car overseas for lots of reasons, and many people were selling their cars back to people in Germany at a good premium. (Does this sound familiar?)

Several weeks back I posted a thread on the 911 forum asking who owns an '89 Speedster https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=34752
, and there were barely any replies.

These were somewhat rare cars-- about 800 imported to the US-- but not much different than a 98 C2S for example.

The results of all this-- A few years ago, a decent '89 Speedster could be had for $40,000. Now the price seems to have nearly doubled for a good, original (i.e. non-conversion) example (if you are even lucky enough to find one, that is).

Did you target German buyers, or they just found your car?

The german buyer found it through the dealer that I was using to consign the car (www.exclusive-motors.com).

I'm interested to see if that 45,000 mile C2S ships out to Germany for the U.S. $58,000 they are asking for it.

As Harvey said, his wife's 993 cab left earlier this week for Germany. We've sold about 3-4 cars this year to Germany.

Although the absolute number of 40 sales per month may be in question, but could be proven one
way or another quite easily if the vendor would drop us a line...... To me the bigger question is, is
the ratio of sales to Europe, Canada, US about right? Because if it is, then there's a definite trend
there that will only move 993 values one direction.

And BTW my car is still for sale, 97 C2 with under 47,000 miles, guards red, cashmere, lowered,
LTW, SSK... all OEM parts. Asking just under $40k. I can wait, as the US inventory goes down and
down and down.

From speaking with collegues in Europe the exchange rate has never been better. Most things are cheaper if bought from this side of the pond-even with the shipping and duties.

I don't think they should. When I was looking for my 993, I saw one for sale by Victory, and it said that the engine was a DOHC!
I just had to e-mail them with the correction that the 993s have a SOHC valve train. Not too long after my e-mail, I saw a 993 listed by Victory stating that it had a SOHC engine.

I think there is some truth to the German import theory. I just had someone contact me who was from the US and helping a friend living in Germany find a car to ship from the U.S. to Germany. I do not know if it will amount to a sale, but it is a lead. There seems to be a feeling out there that the market is soft. I have had several offers for my car that have been around 15% lower than my asking price.
