9m93RS Clubsport GT2 look: Bodywork
Some of you may remember my posts on the 964 forum of the first 9m64RS Clubsport that we built for a customer last year - now it's the turn of us 993 boys to follow the build of our first customer 993 version.
The customer specification for the car is currently:
RHD RS shell with full 9m M003 cage
GT2 bodywork in Basalt Black
Black alacantara/leather interior, red detailing
Black Nomex seats with red Schroth harnesses
9m Racing 400+hp 3.82 engine (more on this later, but essentially the same spec as the pre-4 litre engine that was in my 993RS CS)
Std 993RS gearbox with 9m LSD
KW Clubsport suspension package, stiff axle kit + poly bushes
Std 993RS brakes
9" & 12" RS Speedlines (custom rims)
245 & 305 Toyo R888 tyres
Here are the first shots of the bodyshell as it came off our Celette jig, fully prepared with exact M003 cage and all RS appropriate reinforcements and brackets, ready to go for dipping and E-coating. The donor shell started life as a C2S Anniversary which had a minor damage to the nearside rear, hence the new turbo quarter panel and sill to match the passenger side; the donor car for the project is a genuine RHD 993RS CS which was written off in an accident.

The bare shell photos above were taken in November just before it went off for dip stripping and E-coating. Here are a few shots of the freshly e-coated shell when it returned in December, note the wheeled dolly we made which bolts on under the shell to protect the sides from the attention of the fork-lift truck drivers at the plant.

OK, will do my best in between earning a living:
Once Marc has aligned the front wings to the doors and bonnet, the first job that Miles (our resident expert painter) does is to prepare and prime the outer panels. Here you can see that we have patterned and cut the rear quarters for the GT2 arches, had spot primed and blocked the car down ready for it's final black primer coat. In some ways it's a shame that the car is going to be Basalt Black as it is difficult to see the differences in the layers of paint, hence the detailed explaination.
Miles masks the car to the floor to prevent dust from inside the car finding it's way onto the wet paint. After the primer has been baked, the exterior panels are then masked so that we can prepare and paint the internal and underfloor areas.

Sorry Shaggy, we did not delete the gutters in this instance because the car had to be the customer's interpretation of what the factory would have built if they made the 993RS CS as a GT2 look .
So, fast forward to June and here we have the interior in primer followed by floorpan preparation. The last shot is Miles removing all the masking from the wheelarches to ready for the first shots of clear over base colour coat.

Colin,
I'd be very interested to hear your opinion/impressions of KW suspension products. I've been considering a set of coilovers for my street car but know very little about them. Are they a quality product?
Thanks

Joe, I recommend them without hesitation. Good company & a great product range that is exceptionally well made. The stainless steel bodies mean that they stay clean and tarnish free whilst on your car in all conditions and should you need to trim the ride height you can do so without fear of siezed adjusters. I am using the 2 way adjustable motorsport package on my 993RS CS this year, much better on track than the factory RS package and even good on the hillclimbs - I'm setting new records compared to last year with the same engine spec so they are definitely doing their job, which is why we selected them for this project. Don't worry, you will see them being fitted soon.
