Thumbs up 1995 Carrera 2- Problem Areas?

Making a deal on a 95 C2 w/ 98k miles. Very clean and drives perfect. Besides leakdown is there anything else I should have checked during the PPI. He has agreed to sell the car for $26,500. and the only thing I have seen negative is the miles. Has the service records back about 6 years.
Is there a way to get the service records from Porsche by giving them the VIN or does it have to be the owner requesting it before they will release the information.
If all goes well should have car in time for the Austin area Porsche Clubs Hill Country Tour.
Have owned many Porsches and the 993's have got to be one of the best all around 911's besides the twin turbo which is out of my range.

Tom,
I just purchased my first 1995 993 4 weeks ago and had the prerequisite PPI.
I had to have brake pads, new rotors and caliper work...$1,400. I knew this going in and was expecting it as the PO was up front about what the car needed. Have the wrench check the brakes and rotors and clutch. When was the last change of oil, fuel filter, brake fluid, transmission fluid, spark plugs? Good luck!

And also have the suspension components checked out: shocks, A-arms, control arms,...

Steering rack - leaking?
Door check straps - clicking/loose?
Rust around window frames/cowl/bottom of a-pillars (remove rubber)?

If it has stock suspension and OEM shocks, just add $2000 to your budget in order to replace the springs/shocks with something decent.

The Porsche dealer sent me records on the one I just purchased, but the PO authorized their release. That said, I've heard folks not being able to get them.

I bought one a few years ago with about the same mileage. Was going on the original clutch, which was obvious and I negotiated down, but I didn't count on replacing the dual mass flywheel, and if I had to do over again would put the light weight flywheel on.

You will likely want to lower it, which is about $34k all in give or take...the incremental over just putting stock suspension back on it was only about $800 in my case.

Rotors and such as said above, any leaking valve cover gaskets, etc.

Most won't give out service info, plus isn't always reported to Porsche...if an indy does it and has receipt...etc.

Hope that helps. Oh, and avoid the 993 board. They will just show you that your ride height is too high, you need to track it, that your calipers should be shiny, that you need $4k wheels, and that blue cars go faster.

Congratulations in advance. Have a check run making sure that the wiring harness recall has been complied with. If not it is a free service from the Porsche dealer if your car is one of the 95s that required it. A vin check will confirm that. As long as the PPI is done by someone knowledgeable in air cooled Porsches you should be good to go. Do a leak down check and see where any oil leaks are coming from. Heck, at 98K it is just getting broken in.

Do a compression test instead of or in addition to the leakdown. Compression is a far greater indicator of general health and leakdown is not in all cases. Perfectly healthy engines can have and have had poor leakdown. It is more important that compression is within the normal range (I think it is around 160 psi, but not too sure) and that all six cylinders are as close to each other as possible.

you need comp and leakdown test, not one or the other.
Leakdown is a good indicator engine health. Search for "leakdown" here, much more info on the topic.

Also, searching here for some key words like "ppi + other common words" will get you a long list of stuff to watch for. Good luck with the purchase! Sounds like a pretty decent deal if all is well.

All the hood struts need to be replaced. Distributor belt and plug wires are likely due. What shape are the jack points in? Leaks at valve covers, timing chain cover? Odometer gear replaced yet? Do seats move backward and forward? All relatively minor items.

You might want to look at the records and see if the kinematic lever in the clutch pedal assembly has been replaced. The original one could at times fail to come all the way back up after the pedal was released. Not all mechanics know about this, and they sometimes diagnose a failing clutch instead.

Problem areas? The biggest is that I only have one. HAha. I was lucky enough to buy a 95 c2 w/94k on it a year ago. You might want to see if it has had its 90k service done yet. Plugs, wires, caps, rotors, dist. drive belt, filters ect. Usually not too major, but significant. +1 what the others already said. All in all... BEST PURCHASE EVER!!! Good luck!

Bought mine with 97K on it. Couldn't be happier. It's my DD and I've already put on 10K in 6 months!

Just buy it, the car will need something, after it's all sorted, you will never care about the money spent!

Of course both of mine are great, & only needed stupid things like hood shocks, that is until I wanted to make them both faster...
