Default I did it!! new to me S4 avant.. daily driver

yep.. Sold the Montero and got an S4. Now my garage is like the German triangle.. Porsche, BMW and an Audi. A while back I was considering another suv (LR-LR3) and then I started to think I needed something a bit more fun. I was extremely bored with driving a automatic suv as a daily driver. So my check list was:

The new ride has to....

1, be able to carry a bunch of equipment. (check)
2, be able to tow a 1000lb sail boat. (check)
3, Be able to use my existing roof rack. (check)
for car toping a small sailboat and mt. bikes
4, get me to the mountains when its snowing "AWD" (check)
Got to get there for the first lift in fresh pow
5, Has to be standard shift (check)
6, Has to be fun to drive (check++++)

I made the right move and damm this car is fast. Anyone else have a S4? Enjoy the pics.

Ryan

We test drove the S4 wagon when shopping for the family vehicle. My wife absolutely loved it... definitely the most fun you'll ever have in a wagon. We ended up going with the volvo XC90 because we wanted a third row. Good luck with her.

My Avant also serves track duty. The car has been "modified" (suspension, brakes, chip, etc.) and is a hoot to drive. It is a pure sports car in "stealth body". Cops never look at me twice. It makes trips to Home Depot or the supermarket much more palatable.

Thanks guys! You said it sigf....

#7, Has to be "stealth" as to not draw any attention from johnny law. And also so customers of mine won't think I'm driving an expensive hot rod.

Nice buy. I'm about to wire funds today for an A4. I like Avants but my fiance already has a Volvo wagon. I looked at a B6 S4 vs. a B7 2.0T. In the end, the B7 (blk, s-line, titanium) made more sense for my needs but turning down the growl and power of the V8 wasn't easy.

Exactly why we bought an XC90 as well. If it proves that we don't use the third row (that she was adamant on having), it's going bye-bye for the S4.

Awesome! if $$ was no object, I'd buy one tomorrow. They also have very good crash safety ratings. Have fun with it!!

I've been looking at those as well as an allroad 4.2. Nice purchase!

How's the AWD between the Audi & BMW compare?

I have an allroad 2.7T and love it. I bought it new in 2002 and now have 88,000 miles. Since it's 6spd, I haven't fouind anything to replace it. I have driven S4 Avants and will probably end up with one eventually, but the back seats are less roomy than the allroad and my kids are still in boosters which means they'll be kicking the back of my seats.

Allroads have terrible resale values so they are a real bargain as long as you get the CPO warranty. My warranty expires in August so I am banking monthly payments to go towards the inevitable repairs.

I loved my old S4. Very fast & very comfortable. There are a couple of real downsides....
1.maintaince, working on the car is a ROYAL PITA! Just change out your fuel filter.
2. Parts are STUPID expensive, like more then the 993!
3. It breaks a lot, stupid sensors & tie rod ends.
4. Not the best of gas, but this is in relationship to the right foot.
5. Get a rear sway bar, it will plow like a stuck pig in any corner

be glad that you didnt drive the RS4... I love the S4 and it is a lot of performance car... the RS4 is even more so, almost too much to use on public streets, with the 8250 redline, etc.

Congrats to you! I love wagons. You get it all in one package.

My wifes 5 series wagon is getting a little long in the tooth and she too was on this kick of needing a 3rd row. I think I have her over the 3rd row issue and were looking at A4s (not S4s, I wish) and e46 BMW 3 series wagons. Someone else asked, anybody know how good BMWs AWD system is in comparsion to the Audi?
