Audi's racing success before they banned their AWD systems is part reason why I got into AWD Porsches. For those of us who grew up with German cars, it's dificult to buy anything but German.

Regarding the BMW and Audi AWD systems, I understand that the BMW works like a Porsche where it's basically a RWD car until there is slippage at the rear and then power is routed to the front, whereas the Audi powers all four wheels all the time. Traditionally I blieve the Audi had the power split 50/50 front and rear but I think the current S4 (B7 platform?) has the power split 40/60 front and rear to make it feel more like a RWD.

I used to love BMWs but I'm less than impressed by their current line up and MB doesn't have any appeal to me.
To me, when I got my S4, it was a fast 4dr, & a very attractive price.

However, "best" awd, not sure there. My EVO 8, is FAR better in the snow then the S4 was, both have the same size & type of tires.

BMW pushes all the other companies to develop new "gimmicks" for all other brands. Don't forget, BMW is one of the ONLY privately owned companies.

The new X drive, is mostly RWD like the AWD in the 993. It handles far better then the Quatto system, & much like the Quattro system in the RS4.

I had an S6 Avant and replaced it with the S4 Avant, the S4 gives up a bit of space but the overall drive is tighter, and it has a great growl when you put your foot into it.

We have an S6 in L.A. (340hp w/RS6 18" wheels, P-zeros, Hotchkis swaybars) and I am trying to convince my wife that we NEED an RS6 Avant (450hp ) in Hong Kong since we have the baby...then again the next generation RS6 Avant will have the Gallardo's V10 turbocharged w/500+ hp, so maybe I'll wait!

Cant' believe they actually discontinued the RS4 (sedan) and replaced it with an RS4 Cabriolet?
not quite true --

- the B7 RS4 platform was offered in sedan initially, then also cabriolet
- both cars have been discontinued, as the B7 RS4 platform ended in 2008
- the next iteration of S4/RS4 is expected to go back to turbocharging

the S4/RS4 V8s are very torquey, growly, a lot of fun... but you would not believe how they drink gas...absolutely unbelievable

the S4/RS4 is great, just not an adequate substitute for a 911 in my opinion. if it is a second car/daily driver, or if someone can only have 1 car and must have 4 doors, it is a great choice

Nothing is a substitue for a 911 and you're right, if you need four doors, it's a great choice. I passed on the S4 due to the poor fuel econo and poor resale (I could've bought one of three S4s with between 19 to 24k mi for ~$25k that seemingly no one else was in a hurry to buy ). The 2.0T with the APR 93 chip at 240HP/300TQis good enough for short city sprints.

I looked for a S4 wogon years ago and could not find one. Ended up with similar car, stretched, which is the A6 2.7T, 6-speed, which had been modified by Championship Porsche Audi in Florida. They chipped it, put in a hand-adjusted (under dash) variable boost manager and lowered it 2" (H&R). Then added an oversized stainless exhaust to sound better and never rust out. I put on matching Bisltein HDs from Germany and BBS wheels. Car has about 340 hp tops, or 310 or 290 - my choice.

Faster than my 97 993 cab, except at top end of course, and handles pretty much as well with Audi Quattro as does my C2. I will add the correct sports sway bars to my ROW M030 and Bilsteins on the 993 and test this statement again soon, since I had the stock sway bars retained on the 993 in the ROW conversion. Great leg room in Audi, gorgeous car, and eats up stock S4s. I'll probably keep it for years more (it is a 2000 with 76k miles).

Both the Audi and the 993 have 17 inch wheels and the stock tire sizes.

Here's my 2004 B6 S4 sedan, actually used by a buddy in his 2008 exotic car calendar.

Drove it around today in our 10" of Ohio snow (running 17" wheels with Pirellis snows), it's an amazing car.

Paul, I saw your car listed in the FS classifieds and considered calling you. It's the only white B6 S4 I've seen and it looks amazing. I went the B7 2.0T route but someone is going to end up with an awesome car.

Here's one I've been eyeing, but I think the A4/S4 is too small for my needs, I'll go A6/allroad:

2005 Audi S4 Avant Wagon - $29777

I was using the 993 as my daily driver... until last week that is. I have to say, i can't wipe the smile off my face. The RS4 is a very capable car.
