Default Vibration.... Alignment in the Bay area?

Fairly new 993, and I've noticed a slight vibration at most speeds, but more pronounced between 40-80mph.

I had my 30k done with Tony Heyer recently and he noticed the same thing.
He told me the tires had a very slight flat spot on them likely from the previous owner not using the car much, and he could be "shave" them, which should help.

I was going to proceed, but was wondering if I should do a full alignment/balancing (i.e. not the cheap kind) before (or after?).

I haven't asked Tony yet, but I presume he could do it, but are there any recommendations for an alignment in the Bay Area?

Since you are in Palo Alto, the most convenient place is Custom Alignment in Mt View (a few blocks from Tony). They are not cheap, but do a decent job on alignment. I prefer Brandon at Roger Kraus in San Leandro, and think it's worth the extra effort. An alignment isn't going to help your vibration and the flat spot would not affect the alignment.

You could try simply having the tires balanced first. That would be cheap. If it didn't help, then shaving would be the next step. While it could be a flat spot, it could be that you've lost a weight and the wheel is out of balance.

Either Roger Kraus or Custom Alignment can do a balance (Kraus could shave the tire too if needed).

I'm totally with Tom about Brandon Kraus of Roger Kraus Racing in Castro Valley. However, I'm not with Tom on Custom Alignment. Night and Day in my book.

I have been happy with Custom Alignment. Wherever you go for a balance, the http://www.gsp9700.com/pub/technical/4127T/4127t.cfm is a must, especially if you have 18" wheels.

Roger Kraus Racing put my M030+HD suspension in and aligned the car. Everything was perfect. Brandon spent a lot of time with a RLer w/ a 993 a few years back tweaking and re-tweaking the suspension setup, so he really knows 993s well. Has the tools and knowledge to do the Kinematic toe, too.

Mine did that when I first go it.

Turns out my tire air pressures were all over the place. After setting them all properly, it totally went away.

I went to Custom Alignment to get new rear tires put on.

Never again.

They scratched the paint on my rims and denied it.

Luckily, I hadn't washed my car for a while and after some discussions they owned up to it because it was obvious that the only clean spot was from there handy work..

Offered to repaint my rim and did not charge for installation.

I was going there based on other peoples recommendations and was disappointed that they didn't take extra precautions with my car being that I told them I was there because people thought they were good.

If U R in PA you should know Bob Grigsby of RMG Enterprises (no affiliation) www.realmeangarage.com
He has done my 911s for 25 yrs. He could diagnose your car and tell Custom what to do. WHen I went around Bob ONCE it was a disaster!. Seriously and I have no reason to slam other than my experience. OTOH when I was ready to race I went to Roger Kraus. Reasonalbly priced and great East Bay hill roads to test drive your beast when he puts it on rails. Why not go with the best when all other things are equal. BTW, I lived in Woodside B4 moving here. WIth 28 K miles on an older car you have flat spots and IMHO need tires. Who did PPI on the car? This should have been caught. Tires are not cheap. : - (

Can anyone recommend another shop in Bay Area that is near Palo Alto (not Custom Alignment in Mt View) without driving to the East Bay (Roger Kraus)?

Replies appreciated!

Default Ask Bob

Call him at RMG 408 738 2060. No affiliation blah, blah. Just did a major project for me and I could not be happier. I guess 25 yrs of going to the same guy means something.

Bob is a great guy and he does all of my maintenance and suspension work
He uses C.A. in Mt view... hard to believe there is no other Alignment place on the Peninsula?

I swear by that Hunter 9700 balancing machine. I had problem tires that a dealer and 2 indy shops couldn't get right. Found someone with that machine and presto, perfectly balanced. The computer will roadforce balance and even tell the tech to break the tire off the rim, rotate it around the rim to the optimal place, and re-inflate and re-balance. I don't go anywhere else now. Good luck.
