The original filter gasket may have stuck onto the filter flange so that there are now two gaskets.

If you take off the fender liner like Garth said, you can plainly see whether or not the washer is there.

I have the fender liner out and you say I can see the washer on the drain plug? The drain plug under the reservoir and large filter that you access from underneath the car? What does the washer look like and what is it made of? Also if i drain the oil from there how much is going to come out?

The ( crush ) washer is ~1mm thick and is generally aluminium - although can also be copper.
If the plug is removed, be prepared to catch at least 8 liters of oil ...

Okay so here is what the drain plug looked like until I bumped it with the fender lining as I was putting it back together.

Then these two pieces fell out.

Now this is what the drain plug looks like.

Does anyone have a picture of the drain plug not on the car. I'm confused at what's going on here but it appears that the drain plug broke and the second piece is an aluminum washer?????

I don't have a pic but I think you nailed it. The seat broke off of the plug.

Another thing that causes oil leaks after a oil change is inadequate torquing of the filters themselves. I always thought "hand tight" was enough, but after doing this and seeing a leak, I now I use an oil wrench to tighten it up a bit more than hand tighten.

I always do a hand tight and then 1/4-1/2 turn more, going by feel to make sure its just right.

Can you loosen the plug? You will not lose much oil if you just crack it open a bit, say just enough to make sure its not on too tight. Make sure you use a good wrench or socket (15mm I think, don't exactly remember). Its certainly looks like someone really tightened it up and the shoulder sheared off..

Cheers,

Mike

The bearing surface of your drain plug has broken-off -- I have seen this before a few times, even when the drain plug is properly torqued. IIRC, there is an updated plug to help prevent this. This is the source of your leak.

Instead of risking that it was over-tightened I am going to drive it back to the shop that did the job.

You might want to source the new correct parts for them before hand.

x2. order a new drain plug and crush washer (or 5, I keep a few spares in reserve myself). When the parts com in have them (or yourself) replace them.

Since, as Chris says this is not an uncommon failure, you might consider doing this at home when the engine is cold. Putting a thumb over a COLD drain would be a lot easier than doing it over a hot one. ...just a thought.
